Commugny brings together Roman archaeological finds, sacred architecture, wine and a pilgrimage route. For planning, it is worth keeping the different themes separate: the remains of the Gallo-Roman villa are not accessible on site, while its wall paintings can be seen at the Musée romain de Nyon.

Roman history and archaeological traces

The remains of the Gallo-Roman villa were discovered in 1904 during earthworks at the cemetery of the Protestant temple. Today, they lie beneath and around the church. The villa’s wall paintings are considered rare and are described as evidence of a Roman presence in the area around the 1st century BC. The Musée romain de Nyon preserves and exhibits archaeological finds from Commugny, and displays the wall paintings. This means you encounter Roman history in two different places: the site itself is not accessible; the paintings can be seen in the museum.

The Gallo-Roman villa is also listed in Category B of the Canton of Vaud’s PBC inventory. The Reformed Church of Saint-Christophe and the Maison gothique, also known as the Maison Jean-Pierre Steffen, are listed in the same category. The Reformed Church was essentially rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. This building history adds a later chapter to the archaeological traces of the village’s past.

Churches and sacred architecture

The Temple de Commugny is used for quiet prayer, music and weddings. It is known for its architecture, intimate vaults and excellent acoustics. The Temple is therefore not just a subject of architectural interest: music is also among its stated uses. The parish provides reservation information for weddings and concerts. If you are planning to use the venue for one of these purposes, you can refer to it.

Wine, activities and agriculture

At the Cave de la Charrue, the Hermanjat family has been producing and tasting its wines since 1872. The estate makes at least a dozen different wines. The WINEscape Game takes you behind the scenes of winemaking: the activity includes tastings and invites participants to solve a fictional crime involving the Fée Verte. This combines a wine theme with a playful mystery rather than focusing solely on the wines.

The Cave de la Charrue designs bespoke activities for groups on request. These include discovery workshops, wine tastings, wine and cheese tastings, and painting with wine. The Estaminet serves homemade regional products, including confectionery made with flour from the farm. The boutique and cellar offer a range of farm products alongside wines: rapeseed oil, flours, jams, spirits, breads and homemade baked goods. The selection may change; if you are interested in specific products, it is worth checking the current range.

Commugny’s agricultural heritage includes cattle farming and grain growing. The village is also still home to an orchard and a winery dating from the 19th century. In addition to viticulture, cattle farming, grain growing and fruit growing are also part of agriculture in Commugny.

Pilgrimage route, municipal forest and Parc Marguerite

The Via Jacobi passes through Commugny on the pilgrimage route between Nyon and Versoix. The stage from Rolle to Commugny is 28 kilometres long and takes seven hours. As conditions can affect the route’s availability, check its status before setting out. Another specific local feature is Avenue George de Mestral, which crosses the municipal forest: it runs for 700 metres from Route de la Branvaude to Chemin du Stand.

In 2019, two of the three playgrounds in Parc Marguerite were made accessible to people with reduced mobility. Check before your visit whether this accessibility is still in place. This provides another specific public facility to consider when planning, alongside the cultural and wine-related attractions.
