Set on a hillside balcony, Grandvaux offers exceptional panoramic views. The wider Lavaux region is also defined by views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. Its vineyard terraces are listed as a cultural landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Grandvaux is one of the six villages in Lavaux classified as sites of national importance. When planning a trip, different interests come together here: the historic village layout, the wine-growing landscape and paths to explore on foot.

Village History in Architectural Features

Grandvaux’s historic village layout is arranged around a loop. A prominent landmark in its history is the massive square bell tower of the former Church of St-Nicolas: it was built in the third quarter of the 14th century, decommissioned in 1540 and later used as a belfry. It was restored in 1954. The sequence of religious use, its later function as a belfry and its restoration makes the building’s long history easy to trace through specific dates.

The Maison Maillardoz, too, can be read through its architecture. Three connected sections of the building sit beneath a distinctive half-hipped roof, alongside a double-flight staircase supported by an arch and decorated corner stones. The building dates to 1524. The roof type and staircase provide different reference points from the year: here, the focus is on the architectural form and construction details.

Another view of the village is offered by the Lallex group of buildings. It sits on a small slope and is defined by a row of winemakers’ houses with ramped staircases, forming a continuous streetscape. The buildings date from the late 18th to the 19th century. Unlike the individual tower or the Maison Maillardoz, Lallex is a picture of a unified settlement.

Wine-Growing Landscapes and Places to Pause

The Lavaux terraces are bordered by vineyard walls and dotted with capites. These small buildings once served as tool sheds. The terraced landscape is protected by UNESCO as a living cultural landscape. Its history is also connected to the people who created it: monks laid out the extraordinary terraced vineyard with the support of winemakers. The village’s architectural heritage and the cultivated wine-growing landscape therefore offer different but complementary perspectives on Grandvaux and Lavaux.

The terraced gardens of the Maison Buttin-de-Loës offer a specific vantage point for views of the Villette vineyard, the lake and the Alps. The Maison is currently open to the public and provides space for events in its various salons and halls. As access arrangements may change, check them before visiting.

If you would also like to experience the wine-growing landscape through its flavours, consider stopping at the Caveau Corto. This winemakers’ wine bar in Grandvaux gives visitors the opportunity to taste one or more wines. Check the current opening hours in advance, as visitor arrangements may change.

Plan Your Hikes and Journey

The Route des Grands Crus de Lavaux is rated easy. It is around 2.8 kilometres long, takes about 90 minutes and can be walked in either direction; it is also intended to be accessible year-round. Eight information stations enhance the educational trail. This makes it possible to plan the route differently from longer hikes that start in Grandvaux.

The hike from Grandvaux to Lutry takes about two hours. The route to Cully is listed as taking around two and a half hours; along the way, there are views of the vineyards and lake. These times can help you choose between the two hikes: the walk to Lutry takes less time, while the route to Cully requires a longer time commitment. If you are considering staying overnight in Grandvaux, you can plan your day around your preferred walking time rather than treating the different hikes as options of equal length.

Bus route 47 runs from Pully to Grandvaux. PostBus route 381 serves Grandvaux, and the village is also on the Lausanne–Bern line (250). Check the timetable for your travel date, as schedules may change. Together with the different hiking times, these connections offer practical points to consider when choosing accommodation and planning your days.
