Villars-sur-Ollon combines an alpine setting with experiences that vary according to the season and your interests. This winter and summer resort lies in the municipality of Ollon in the canton of Vaud, at around 1,300 metres above sea level and about 900 metres above the RhĂ´ne Valley. A mountain lake and themed trails complement winter sports, golf and swimming facilities, so you can plan your stay around the activities you prefer.

Mountain lake and trails around Bretaye

Lac des Chavonnes is a natural lake at an altitude of 1,690 metres, surrounded by nature. An easy, family-friendly route takes you from Villars to Bretaye by cog railway; from there, it is about a 30-minute walk to the lake. Check the current train timetable before setting off. In winter, the shores of Lac des Chavonnes can be reached on snowshoes or skis.

If you are interested in snowshoeing, the Circuit des lacs offers another option: the route is five kilometres long and starts at Col de Bretaye, which is accessible by the Villars–Bretaye mountain railway. Along the way, glacial lakes, mountains and fir-lined landscapes shape the winter scenery. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

The Path to the History of the Earth themed trail offers a different experience, running 4.6 kilometres between Bretaye and Villars. Nine stops explain the history and development of our planet. Iron sculptures illustrate the themes, and information is available in English and French. The lakeside visit, snowshoe route and themed trail therefore differ both in their seasonal focus and in their length.

Winter and summer activities

In winter, Villars-sur-Ollon provides access to a ski area with 420 kilometres of ski slopes. For a different way to enjoy the outdoors, the shores of Lac des Chavonnes can be reached on snowshoes or skis. The Patinoire de Villars at the Centre des Sports offers ice skating from July to April; equipment can be rented on site.

There are different options in summer too: canyoning trips through deep gorges are among the activities for visitors around Villars-sur-Ollon. The area is also suited to long hikes with panoramic views. If you have not yet decided when to travel, you can compare these summer activities with the winter slopes, snowshoe trails and seasonal activities at the ice rink.

Golf, play and ice skating

Golf Club de Villars is the only 18-hole mountain golf course in the Vaud Alps. Families can visit Villars Fun Park, an outdoor play area designed for families. It is in the heart of the resort, near the Centre des Sports du Tennis, and offers outdoor recreation throughout the year.

In winter, regular activities such as curling and disco evenings complement ice skating at the rink. As the programme can vary seasonally, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. This can help you match your travel dates to your preferred activity without treating ice skating, winter sports and play facilities as the same experience.

Swimming and relaxation

Les Bains de Villars features two hammams at 45 and 50°C, respectively, and two saunas at 90°C. The outdoor pool is heated to 33–36°C and has massage jets. The bathing area also includes a 25-metre swimming pool with five lanes. The different pools and thermal facilities offer a range of ways to enjoy your visit.

Getting there and finding accommodation

The Bex-Villars-Bretaye (BVB) R74 train takes about 45 minutes to travel from Bex via Gryon to Villars. In Villars, passengers can change to another train to Bretaye. If you are looking for accommodation for a visit around Bretaye, factor this connection into your plans and check the timetable before travelling. This will help you coordinate your journey with the trails and activities you have planned.
