Corbeyrier lies in the Aigle district and overlooks the village of Yvorne. From here, the views stretch across the Rhône plain to the upper end of Lake Geneva. The alpine pastures of the Agittes also connect the landscape with a specific viewpoint: they lie along the road between Corbeyrier and La Lécherette and offer a view of Lake Geneva. Since 2022, the municipality has been part of the perimeter of the Gruyère Pays-d’En-Haut Regional Nature Park because of its distinctive landscapes.
Mountain trails for a range of day plans
In summer, Corbeyrier offers numerous options for walking and cycling. Routes range from the lower part of the municipality and the vineyards of Yvorne to the highest point near Leysin and the Kuklos. In winter, snowshoeing is possible on the Luan plateau and at the La Praille and Gros Bois alpine pastures. The trails mentioned there are not marked—keep this in mind when choosing your route.
The 2024 local hiking map gives the Tour de Champillon / Sentier des Songes loop as 2.7 kilometres and 58 minutes, with 175 metres of ascent and descent each. The one-way route from Corbeyrier to Luan is listed as 2.6 kilometres and 68 minutes, with 330 metres of ascent and 65 metres of descent. So a nearly identical distance does not mean the same elevation profile: trail type and elevation gain can also help you choose. The Corbeyrier–Boveau–Champ Riond–Vers-Cort–Corbeyrier loop is 5.1 kilometres long and listed as 104 minutes, with 326 metres of ascent and descent each. For the Sentier découverte de la Joux Verte loop, the map lists 9 kilometres, 180 minutes and 523 metres of ascent and descent each.
From Corbeyrier, you can reach the Joux-Verte on foot via the Sentier des quatre mélèzes, which leads to the Agittes plateau. Most of the Joux-Verte forest is designated as a forest reserve. The Vallon de l’Eau Froide extends across Corbeyrier, Villeneuve and Roche and lies within the nationally designated IFP 1515 Tour d’Aï – Dent de Corjon landscape area.
Forest trails and traces of hydropower
The Sentier de la Joux-Verte leads to the remains of a weir and sluice structure dating from 1965, visible from a modern footbridge. The weir and sluice structure on the Eau Froide at Le Folliau was used to create a 17,000-cubic-metre reservoir at an altitude of 1,300 metres. Timber was also floated down the cascades as far as Roche. The trails thus bring together forest landscapes and traces of an earlier use of water.
There are also named landmarks to help you get your bearings on a short visit: a granite table and granite benches stand at the junction of Route des Agittes and Chemin de la Grosse Pierre; an orientation board is nearby.
Getting there and planning your stay
A bus serves the Aigle–Yvorne–Corbeyrier–Luan route. Check the current timetable before planning your journey. Route de l’Hongrin connects Corbeyrier with La Lécherette and crosses the Petit Hongrin firing range, located in the centre of a military zone. Check access conditions and firing restrictions before setting out.
For a mountain stay, the Cabane de Luan in the municipality of Corbeyrier has been welcoming schools, groups and families since 1952. Café de Luan sources meat and charcuterie from local producers, including those in Corbeyrier; its cheese and fondue come from Tompey and Bulle. The availability of individual products may vary.
Village history and cultural events
The oldest recorded village names date back a long way: Curbiriaco is attested in 1261, and Curbirie at the end of the 13th century. From 1577, the name Corberier appears, from which Corbeyrier developed. Locally, residents are nicknamed “Voleurs-de-Loup” and “Les Robaleux”; the latter means “lè Robâ-Lâo” in Vaud patois. A local wolf story tells of an injured wolf pursued by hunters from Leysin and killed within the municipality of Corbeyrier. The residents did not hand over the carcass to the neighbouring hunters.
The Festival Celtique de Corbeyrier takes place every two years; check specific dates separately. At the beginning of summer, mead is drunk, and people sing and dance. The visitor programme also includes the Scottish Ceilidh: steps and figures from this dance tradition, with its singing and dancing, are explained and open to everyone. In December, a traditional Advent concert takes place at the Temple de Corbeyrier, jointly organised by the Confrérie du Loup and the municipality.
