Venthône combines historic village walks with themed trails through forests and countryside. During your stay, you can choose between a short walk in the village centre and longer routes with published distances and elevation gains. The village also has buildings with a history spanning the Middle Ages to the more recent past. This lets you tailor your trip to your interests without having to make a single circular route the focus of your itinerary.

Village Character and Views

Venthône is a village in the municipality of Noble-Contrée, in the Sierre District of the canton of Valais. It lies at an altitude of 799 metres; elevations range from 606 to 963 metres above sea level. The village includes the hamlets of Anchettes, Darnona and Le Moulin. From Venthône, panoramic views extend particularly towards the mountains of the Val d’Anniviers and Haut-Valais.

The historic architectural heritage includes buildings dating from the 12th to the 19th century. In Switzerland, Venthône is listed among sites of national importance. The entire historic built area of Vieux-Village, Le Moulin and Anchettes has been inventoried and classified; it was made available for public review in 2005. This span of history is also reflected in the walks, which focus on individual buildings and the village’s cultural heritage.

Historic Walks and Buildings

The historic walk through Venthône identifies and briefly describes 26 buildings. Its shorter option is a 45-minute loop in the village centre. This provides a specific walking option for those with limited time; if you are planning a longer visit, you can explore the extended themed trails. A historic walk also introduces the cultural heritage through educational panels.

The Château de Venthône was built at the end of the 12th century and is used as a venue for exhibitions. The present-day Chapel of Muzot dates from the 18th century: Nicolas Im Winkelried of Venthône built it as a votive chapel on the site of a former parish church. The church stood on the route between Veyras and Miège. Of the medieval village to which the former parish church is thought to have belonged, only the inhabited fortified house where Rainer Maria Rilke lived from 1921 to 1926 remains.

Themed Trails Through Forests and Countryside

The Sentier du Bénou can be started at any of three specified points: the Obabao car park, the Rétana SMC bus stop or the Sainte-Marguerite Chapel. Check the local signage before setting off. Along the way, themed panels and a smartphone app explain the history of the bisse and water management. The trail thus combines a specific route with insights into how water is managed.

The Parcours de l’Engoulevent also focuses on learning: its ten stages lead through a Valais forest and introduce typical animal and plant species, as well as the seasonal aspects of forest life. If you want to give nature topics a different emphasis in your plans, this trail offers a clear focus on forests, species and the seasons.

For longer routes, the details of the Trail de la Noble Contrée are useful: it covers 27 kilometres and 1,500 metres of elevation gain, passing through Venthône, Miège and Veyras, and ends with a climb below the Château de Venthône. A shorter running option is the Benou Run, at 10.8 kilometres with 350 metres of positive elevation gain. The stated distances and elevation profiles give you concrete figures for planning, without implying a walking or running time.

Obabao and Seasonal Planning

Obabao is a place for play and social interaction, where people of different generations can find activities to suit their interests. The facilities include two purpose-built pétanque courts. Obabao is open in spring and summer, weather permitting. As seasonal opening information can change, check the situation before your visit.

Another local connection can be found in Darnona: sage is harvested there for use in Ricola production.
