The Maison du Remuage brings history to life in a single house: it was built in 1726 in the Zervettaz district of Sierre, and its second floor was added in 1837. The house represents traditional life in Sierre and recalls the seasonal migration between the Val d’Anniviers and the plain. Sierre lies between Upper and Lower Valais, on the linguistic border between the German- and French-speaking parts of Valais.

Historic places and cultural life

The Château Mercier also brings together architectural history and culture. Jean-Jacques Mercier-de Molin and Marie Mercier-de-Molin built their summer residence on the Pradegg hill in 1906, on an estate of almost four hectares. Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque features define the château. Today, it hosts cultural events, including the Rencontres Orient-Occident and writing workshops held as part of the Dreamago film festival. The programme may change; check event dates before visiting.

In the historic town centre, the richly decorated Hôtel de Ville is one of the most distinctive buildings; Rue du Bourg is lined with historic houses. The Théâtre Les Halles offers a different architectural perspective: it preserves industrial architecture as a trace of a former metalworking company. Its contemporary programme includes theatre, dance, music and circus. Local associations and professional companies come together there; the programme may also change. The Rilke Foundation Museum documents Rainer Maria Rilke’s life and time in Muzot through documents, photos, other images and stories.

Wine in exhibitions, landscapes and cuisine

The Musée du Vin is spread across two exhibition venues: one in the Château de Villa in Sierre and the other in the wine-growing village of Salquenen. The Sierre venue hosts temporary exhibitions exploring different aspects of vines and wine. You’ll find it at Rue Sainte-Catherine 6, near the Château de Villa. In Salquenen, the permanent exhibition “La vigne et le vin, toute une histoire” explores Valais’s winegrowing and wine culture. The Vineyard Trail connects the two venues and passes through vineyards, wine-growing villages and the wild Raspille Gorge. The approximately six-kilometre route is estimated to take about two and a half hours; measurements may vary slightly depending on the mapping method.

At the Château de Villa, the restaurant serves raclette made with five different cheeses. As the menu may change, please check the current selection. The wine library offers around 780 wines from 120 Valais wine producers; its stock may also change. This brings a specific dish and a wide selection of Valais wines together in one place.

The guided Escapade gourmande Ă  travers Sierre offers a different focus: a guide explains the history of three unusual places in the city. The tour can be taken on foot or by e-bike. It includes five typical regional wines, a Valais platter and a dish featuring Valais specialties. As this is a bookable experience, availability may change; check before your travel date.

Vineyards, wetlands and water

The wine landscape also has different sides. The vineyard at Château Lichten is laid out in terraces, is home to exceptional biodiversity and offers views across the Rhône plain. In the Rhône Valley, vineyards, forests, mountains, historic irrigation channels and the Rhône form part of the landscape around Sierre.

The Pouta Fontana nature reserve is nearby. At 32 hectares, it is the largest wetland in Valais. Around 190 bird species have been observed there, 54 of which nest more or less regularly. An observation station and information panels are available to visitors; access may depend on maintenance and seasonal conditions. From Sierre railway station, take the Sion–Sierre bus to the Grône stop, then continue on foot for about 15 minutes. Check the timetable before travelling, as services may change.

Swimming is possible at Lac de Géronde, which covers 5.5 hectares. The Bains de Géronde has two heated pools, a paddling pool and a water slide. As facilities may change, please check before your visit.
