Val d’Illiez lies at the foot of the Dents du Midi, whose highest summit reaches 3,257 m. More than 30 orchid species bloom in the valley, including some rare species. That is why Val-d’Illiez is also known as the «Vallée des orchidées». Rare flower species are protected by federal and cantonal laws and must not be picked.
The tours lead through very different landscapes and require varying amounts of time, from a waterfall loop trail to multi-day hikes. Mountain Lakes and Hikes
Lac de Soi is located in the municipality of Val-d’Illiez, below the Dents du Midi, at an altitude of 2,247 m. The small mountain lake offers a view across the valley and is known for its unusual stone structures. It is covered in snow for more than eight months every year. From Plan de Soi on Route des Rives, it takes 2 hours and 55 minutes to walk to the lake. The hike to Lac de Soi is rated difficult and is listed as 10.9 km, with 1,075 m of ascent and 1,075 m of descent.
The Lacs d’Antème lie at 2,032 m at the foot of the Dents du Midi. They form a high-altitude limestone cirque below the northwest face of the Haute Cime; the ascent takes several hours. Lac de Soi and the Lacs d’Antème therefore offer different details for planning your time: a walking time from Plan de Soi is given for access to Lac de Soi, while the ascent to the Lacs d’Antème takes several hours.
A loop trail from the village of Val-d’Illiez leads to the Cascade de Frassenaye waterfall and back. The hike is rated moderate: it is listed as 8.6 km, with 730 m of ascent and 730 m of descent, and a duration of 3 hours and 45 minutes. Check route conditions and signage before setting out.
For a longer outing, the main route of the Tour de la Vallée d’Illiez offers a multi-day option: it is more than 60 km long and is listed as taking three to five hiking days. Named places along the route include Champéry, Champoussin, Morgins, Les Crosets, Val-d’Illiez, Monthey and Troistorrents. Check route conditions and seasonal accessibility before setting off. By comparison, the stated duration of the Frassenaye hike makes it more suitable as a single outing.
Trails and Local History
The Val-d’Illiez–Champoussin trail is lined with dry-stone walls dating from the early 20th century. Along the way, the route passes an oratory dedicated to Saint Thérèse. This makes the hike an opportunity to discover traces of local building and religious history.
The Les Vieux Greniers Museum is housed in an old village granary that was once used to store Sunday clothes and military equipment. Temporary exhibitions feature local collections and preserved objects. The museum is temporarily closed; check whether visits have resumed before going.
The Eglise Saint Maurice is also part of the area’s history. Jean Axeri and Jean Geomina of Novara built it in 1687. The present-day church is the third sanctuary to have been built on this site. The Val-d’Illiez patois is notable for its characteristic accent, distinctive sound, rich vocabulary and numerous syntactic features. The etymology of many words suggests a direct Celtic origin.
Getting There and Discovering the Region
Route 21 connects Monthey to Val-d’Illiez and Champéry via Troistorrents. From Aigle, the AOMC regional railway (Aigle–Ollon–Monthey–Champéry) continues to the villages of the Dents du Midi region, connecting the cantons of Vaud and Valais. The villages of the Val d’Illiez are about 20 minutes from exit 18 at St-Triphon on the A9 motorway.
To sample local specialties, products awarded the «Saveurs Dents du Midi» label include alpine cheese, dried meat and smoked hams, made locally using traditional methods. These products are available at La Cavagne shops in Troistorrents and Champéry.
