In Gentilino, church art, historic homes and a special connection to cultural history come together. The Sant’Abbondio church complex lies between meadows and vineyards; the cemetery and the Hermann Hesse educational and commemorative trail add another historical dimension to the area. Visitors choosing Gentilino for a stay will find several cultural highlights to explore individually.

Historic houses and façade details

The Antica Casa Gamboni on Via Cà di Sotto is one of the municipality’s oldest and most valuable residential buildings. Its façade is decorated in the late Renaissance style. At Casa Casellini on Piazzetta al Portico, meanwhile, the illusionistic architectural decoration on parts of the façades catches the eye: a fresco creates the illusion of a marble relief, alongside a depiction of the Judgement of Solomon. The year 1498 has been repainted at the top of a dormer window.

The year 1610 on the façade of the Antica Casa Gamboni also points to a later building phase. It refers to a reconstruction or renovation by the Gamboni family. The two dates therefore provide different clues: 1498 has been repainted on the dormer window, while 1610 is associated with a possible structural alteration to Casa Gamboni.

Casa Sant’Abbondio features illusionistic architectural details on its façades. The building was constructed towards the end of the 17th century at the instigation of two clergymen from the Bottani family. In 1843, the family had a chapel dedicated to Saint Clare built and commissioned Bartolomeo Antonio Solari to paint frescoes in some of the rooms. Casa Somazzi adds a different period of construction to this picture: its present appearance dates from 1860 and is late Neoclassical. Frescoes by Solari from Figino decorate the ceilings with depictions of animals, still lifes and plant motifs.

Sacred art and the Sant’Abbondio complex

The Oratorio della Presentazione di Gesù al tempio dates from 1670. Its concave façade is designed in the Barocchetto style. Inside is a marble altar with an oval copy of the 18th-century painting “The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple”. The architectural form and altarpiece create distinct points of interest: the curved façade outside and the combination of marble and painting inside.

The Sant’Abbondio church complex also includes 14 Stations of the Cross from the 17th century, painted in oil on copper panels. Together with its location between meadows and vineyards, they shape the character of this part of Gentilino. The Cimitero di Sant’Abbondio is considered one of the most important monumental cemeteries in Ticino. It was probably designed in 1836 by architect Domenico Gilardi. Visitor information also includes a link to a map of the notable people buried there.

Following in Hermann Hesse’s footsteps

The Hermann Hesse educational and commemorative trail runs from Montagnola to the cemetery in Gentilino, where Hesse has rested since 1962. The route links a starting point in Montagnola with the cemetery, giving the visit a clear connection to literary history. If you plan to take this trail, check current access information before setting out. The cemetery can also be visited as a destination in its own right: its importance as a monumental cemetery and the map of the notable people buried there offer a different perspective from the architecture of the homes or the sacred art.
