At the Chiesa di San Tommaso, local history, art and landscape meet: the church stands at the foot of Monte Croce, in a commanding position above Agra. Historic buildings, trails and a bookable wine experience also shape the character of the village. This allows you to tailor your stay to different interests rather than reducing Agra to just one theme.

Church, Cemetery and Local History

The Chiesa di San Tommaso is documented at least as far back as 1298. Its present form dates from the late 18th century, and its choirs are decorated with illusionistic frescoes dating from 1770 to 1780. The church was restored between 1968 and 1980. For a visit, use the Agra, Paese bus stop. The village’s long history extends beyond the church: Agra is mentioned in documents from 1335 as part of the historic Concilium de Agra et Premona.

The cemetery of Agra lies directly beside the church. It is a publicly accessible open space with unobstructed views of the hills of Carona. It also has its own architectural features: Luigi Vassalli designed the Bottani family chapel, and the Adamini family tomb bears the signature of Andreoletti of Porto Ceresio. The church, cemetery, chapel and tomb thus offer different points of entry for exploring the area’s architectural and local history.

Sanatorium and Historic Houses

The former sanatorium in Agra was designed by Zurich architect Edwin Wipf, with the support of engineer Robert Maillart. Its well-known visitors included Hermann Hesse. The facility was connected to the area’s climatic potential: the panorama included the Gulf of Agno, Malcantone and peaks as far away as Monte Rosa. The sanatorium closed permanently in 1969 and was demolished in 2009 to make way for today’s Resort Collina d’Oro. This chapter in the area’s history is therefore clearly distinct from the site’s current use.

Palazzo Poncini also tells a story of changing uses. The building was erected in 1845 as the residence of the Poncini family, on a large plot with an extensive garden. In the first half of the 20th century, it was converted into a hotel for relatives of patients at the nearby German sanatorium. In 2023, the palazzo was completely renovated and converted into a residential complex.

Casa Adamini in Bigogno di Agra has housed Grotto Flora since 1920. The building is attributed to an anonymous author and dated to the 18th century. Its façade is atypical of Collina d’Oro; its arches are more characteristic of tobacco-drying architecture in the Mendrisiotto. Casa Corte Adamini is a separate building: its well-preserved exterior façade fits the local built environment, while wooden loggias inside provide access to the floors.

Roccolo and Trails Through Green Spaces

At Roccolo Adamini, the building’s design and its relationship to the landscape can be considered together. The building lies in the Vallone forest, along public footpaths and within the recreation area below the former sanatorium. It has a rectangular floor plan and two larger openings on each floor. Trees arranged in a semicircle have been preserved, so its historic integration into the landscape is still clearly visible. The roccolo is described as a typical building of the farming tradition.

Route-planning information is available at different scales. The Vita-Parcours in Bigogno/Posmonte runs for 3.6 kilometres and has an elevation gain of 120 metres. The municipality of Collina d’Oro also has a well-maintained network of trails extending for about 30 kilometres. It includes, among others, routes between Carabietta, Agra, Gentilino and Montagnola; most of the network runs outside built-up areas. There is a PubliBike station at the Bigogno-Agra recreation facility. This information helps you distinguish between planning an individual route and considering the municipal trail network as a whole.

Wine Tasting in Agra

Gold Wine Tasting is a bookable wine-tasting experience at the roccolo of Resort Collina d’Oro in Agra. It is attended by an oenologist from Fattoria Moncucchetto and the resort’s sommelier. The tasting introduces grape varieties from the vineyard that produces Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. It includes three wines—a white, a red and a sparkling wine—as well as a large selection of typical Ticino cured meats and cheeses. If you plan to take part, check availability, booking conditions and what is currently included in advance, as these may change.
