The ruins of Serravalle Castle and the church art give Semione a distinct cultural focus; hiking trails complement your stay with different planning profiles. The Salamandra Vagabonda is a marked circular trail with information on its length and minimum duration, while the Giro del Castello di Serravalle leads into the village. This lets you distinguish between routes with specific distance details and one with seasonally varying conditions when planning your trip.

Serravalle Castle and Sacred Buildings

The ruins of Serravalle Castle stand north of the village of Semione. An earlier fortified structure near the castle dates from around 900 and was destroyed in 1182. The present-day castle was built by the Milanese between 1220 and 1230. This site therefore encompasses several historical building phases: an early fortification and the later castle.

The Church of Beata Vergine Assunta also tells of different periods of construction. Its Romanesque building was mentioned in 1207; only the bell tower remains. The present-day church dates from 1733 and contains valuable stucco work. The Chapel of the Dead in the cemetery of Semione adds another art-historical highlight: it is entirely decorated with frescoes by painters from the Seregno area, dating from the second half of the 15th century.

In the hamlet of Serravalle, near the castle, stands the Oratorio di S. Maria del Castello. Its interior frescoes date from the 14th to the 16th century; many are attributed to the Tarilli family of Cureglia. The frescoes in the Chapel of the Dead and those in the Oratorio thus differ both in their dating and in their recorded attribution. Semione offers a culture-focused trip not only the castle ruins, but also various works of sacred art and stories of its buildings.

Hiking Trails with Different Key Details

The themed Salamandra Vagabonda trail is a circular mountain route suitable for families with children. It is 5.5 kilometres long, runs through the forests between Ludiano and Semione, and is well signposted. Allow at least 2 hours and 30 minutes for the route. Its length and minimum duration provide a clear basis for planning how to allocate your time on a hiking day.

The Giro del Castello di Serravalle leads into the village of Semione. Its route conditions can vary by season, so check the conditions for the relevant season before setting out. The trails offer different information to guide your planning: for the Salamandra, the key details are its length and minimum duration; for the Giro, they are its destination in the village and the season-dependent conditions.

Settlement and Landscape

Semione’s settlement pattern includes a village surrounded by forest and the former alpine summer pasture of Navone. Navone has not been inhabited year-round since 1520; some of its former stables have been converted into holiday homes.

Capanna Pian d'Alpe lies in a fir forest above gentle slopes, extensive larch and fir forests, and large pasture areas. It is a starting point for a multi-stage traverse. So, in addition to the forest trails between Ludiano and Semione, you can choose a landscape of forests, slopes and pasture areas, as well as another option for a tour.
