More than 200 plant species in Naturetum and alpine trails through Lucomagno give Acquacalda a strong focus on nature. The Centro Pro Natura Lucomagno is located at an altitude of 1,750 m and is a starting point for walks, hikes and trekking tours. Those looking for accommodation here can combine their stay with exploring the landscape, regional activities and different travel options.
Naturetum and the Alpine Landscape
The short Naturetum circular trail is next to the Centro Pro Natura and leads through wetlands, rocks, forests and meadows. Visitors can admire more than 200 plant species there without leaving the centre. The Centro is set in an alpine landscape listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments. The Piora, Lucomagno and Dötra region is also listed in the Inventory of Landscapes, Sites and Natural Monuments of National Importance. The geology of Lucomagno includes soluble rock formations with sinkholes and swallow holes. The Centro itself is housed in a former hospice for travellers crossing the pass.
Hikes for Different Timeframes
The Lucomagno area has a dense network of trails, with routes of varying difficulty and seven nature trails. These are promoted by Blenio Turismo together with the Municipality of Blenio, the Patriziato of Olivone and the relevant nature, landscape and forestry offices. One specific option for planning your time is the Sentiero dell’Acqua: the trail is 3.7 km long and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to walk. It connects the Centro Pro Natura in Acquacalda with the village of Dötra and can be walked in either direction. Along the way, it passes four landscapes of national importance, with explanatory information boards; its theme invites visitors to reflect on the effects of climate change on alpine landscapes. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The Alpi del Lucomagno circular trail starts in Acquacalda, follows the signposted Route 7 and successively leads to the old and new alpine pastures of Alpe Pian Segno, Alpe Gana, Alpe Croce, Alpe Pertusio, Alpe Casaccia, Alpe Sanprou and Alpe Pozzetta. Another mountain hiking route starts and ends in Acquacalda, with stops at Pian Segno, Campo Solario, Ospizio Santa Maria, Alpe Pertusio and Alpe Gana. For comparison, the hiking route from Passo del Lucomagno to Capanna Cadagno takes just under four hours and is rated T2.
Forest, Water and Wildlife Watching
The Selvasecca forest reserve is located on the Lucomagno road near Acquacalda. Its landscapes include Zermatt spruce forest, marshland and peat bogs. The reserve is home to deer, roe deer, squirrels, foxes, amphibians and many birds; with patience, they can be observed, although sightings are not guaranteed. One alternative route to Capanna Cadagno leads from the Acquacalda bus stop through the protected Selva Secca stone pine forest and onwards past small lakes and streams to Passo del Sole. The source of the Brenno near Alpe Pertusio can also be reached from Acquacalda by trail.
Getting There and Routes to the Starting Point
Autolinee Bleniesi operates the Biasca–Passo del Lucomagno route and offers four daily services to Acquacalda from June to October. Check the current timetable before travelling. By car, Acquacalda is about 45 minutes from Biasca; from Chur or Göschenen, the road goes over the Oberalp Pass and the journey takes about an hour. For cyclists, the ride from Biasca is around 35 km with 1,530 m of elevation gain, while from Disentis it is around 24 km with 895 m of elevation gain. The route from Biasca is therefore longer and has a greater elevation gain. On foot, Acquacalda can be reached from the alpine lakes of Piora via a mountain pass and Campo Solario.
