Malvaglia is the main village in the municipality of Serravalle. Two themes provide a useful guide when planning a stay: the varied landscapes of Val Malvaglia and its historic buildings and settlements. This lets you explore nature and culture as separate highlights, rather than squeezing them into a tightly packed itinerary.

Landscape, Trails and Arrival

Val Malvaglia encompasses a variety of landscapes, from the chestnut forest in the lower valley to dry meadows, wetlands, larch and spruce forests, and alpine pastures. If you are interested in nature and higher elevations, you will find a broad range of landscape types within the valley.

The Malvaglia-Dagro cable car operates year-round and reaches the sunny terrace of Dagro, at an elevation of 1,400 metres, in eight minutes. Check its operating status before your trip. The Cascata FĂĽrbeda waterfall also shapes the landscape: it lies beyond the small hamlet of Dandrio and plunges dramatically down; its distinctive form defines large parts of Val Malvaglia.

The valley has a dense network of trails with routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels. These differences help you choose hikes according to the time available and the level of challenge you want, without treating every trail as the same. One specific option is the Giro del Castello di Serravalle. This hike is listed as six kilometres long, with 480 metres of elevation gain and a duration of two hours and 30 minutes. Seasonal closures are possible; check the route status before setting out.

Historic Buildings in Malvaglia

The Palazzo dei Landfogti, originally Casa Baggio, is a historic building in Malvaglia and is listed as a cultural property of cantonal importance. It is also considered one of the most significant examples of Renaissance civil architecture in Ticino. It offers an introduction to secular architecture, while churches and oratories reveal other architectural forms and aspects of religious history.

One of the best-known Case dei Pagani in Ticino is also located in Malvaglia. The Casa dei Pagani clings to a granite wall at the mouth of the Orino River gorge. Seen through its window, it appears as a rectangle suspended above the void. Archaeological finds suggest that wealthy families from the surrounding area probably lived in the building between the 11th and 14th centuries. It is thought to have also served the farming population in times of war. This interpretation links its striking location to possible use over several centuries without claiming certainty about its early history.

The present-day Church of San Martino preserves fragments of the side walls of a 13th-century church dedicated to Saint Martin. They were incorporated into the current building during extensions in the 16th and 17th centuries. Here, you can see medieval building elements within a church that was expanded later.

In Navone stands the Oratorio di S. Maria Bambina, a Baroque building with an octagonal floor plan, constructed around a votive chapel. Together with the palazzo and the fragments of San Martino, it illustrates different architectural approaches: Renaissance civil architecture, surviving medieval elements and a Baroque religious building.

Hike to Selvapiana

The Giro del Castello di Serravalle leads to the abandoned village of Selvapiana. Its stated duration of two and a half hours can be considered alongside the distance and elevation gain when planning your time; these figures describe one specific hiking option, not the trails across the entire valley in general. When planning, remember that this route may be subject to seasonal closures.

Selvapiana is not only the destination of the hike but also a place of historical significance: in the Middle Ages, it was one of the most important inhabited centres in the entire valley. The route therefore combines a specific hike with a glimpse into the earlier settlement of Val Malvaglia. If you would like to focus your stay more on architecture, you can instead explore the building styles in Malvaglia and Navone; if you prefer to discover landscapes and higher elevations, the valley's different landscapes and trail network offer a focus of their own.
