On the right bank of the Thur, Bürglen shows how closely a town’s appearance is tied to its history: the historic center lies on a rocky terrace above the banks of the Thur. The castle, medieval street layout, church and industrial architecture offer several cultural and historical points of interest during a stay. When planning, it is worth distinguishing these sights from activities that depend on specific dates or seasons.

Historic center on the Thur

The small town, once surrounded by a ring wall, dates back to the Barons of Bürglen and was first mentioned in a document in 1176. The medieval street layout is still clearly discernible in the historic center. It is as much a part of the townscape as its striking individual buildings: as you explore, take note of the lines of the streets. Bürglen lies on the right bank of the Thur; the rocky terrace forms the topographical setting for the old center. A railway line that opened in 1867 passes the settlement to the south, running between the river and Weinfelder-/Sulgerstrasse. This spatial arrangement adds to the picture of the settlement, river and roads.

Castle and church: a comparison of architectural history

Bürglen Castle is the ancestral seat of the Barons of Bürglen. From 1579 to 1798, it was the seat of the lordship of the same name, which belonged to the city of St. Gallen. The complex features building phases from the 13th to the 18th century; an extension was added in 1950/51. The older building phases and the much later extension show that the complex developed over several centuries.

The Reformed church in Bürglen was formerly the castle chapel. Its masonry is largely late Gothic, and it also has tall round-arched windows. The former castle chapel was extended in 1684/85. Alongside the castle’s architectural history, the church offers its own architectural focus: here, the emphasis is on its former function as a chapel and its late Gothic features.

Mill and industrial history

The mill in Bürglen is a castle-like, four-story building with battlements and a round oriel dating from 1903. An earlier milestone in the area’s industrial history was the Leumann brothers’ dye works: built on the Mühlekanal in 1844, it marked the beginning of the industrial age in Bürglen. The mill and dye works offer different perspectives on the town’s history—through the mill’s distinctive architecture on the one hand and the early start of industrialization on the other.

Guided tours, a circular route and seasonal activities

Guided tours of the small town take visitors through old Bürglen. Castle tours offer the chance to visit Bürglen Castle and learn more about life in the Middle Ages. If a guided tour is to be the main focus of your visit, check the current schedule before you travel. Another option in Bürglen is the “Route Bürglen Süd,” a red-marked circular route; availability may change, so it is best to check for updates before your visit.

In the municipality of Bürglen, Istighofer Weiher invites visitors to swim in summer. In winter, it is opened for ice skating when the ice is thick enough to bear weight. Planning your visit therefore depends on different conditions: guided tours have set dates, the route’s availability can change, and winter use of the pond also depends on ice conditions. You can choose among these activities according to your travel dates and interests.
