Explore Weinfelden on foot and you’ll encounter winegrowing as more than just part of the landscape: the wine trail winds through the vineyards of Weinfelden, Boltshausen and Ottoberg. More than 30 information boards cover viticulture, grape varieties, winemaking and local vintners. The nine-kilometre circular hike starts and ends at Weinfelden train station; restaurants and inns along the route serve Thurgau specialities. The wine-growing landscape includes around 4,530 ares of vineyards. A tasting backpack from the station contains a map, a wine glass, handmade herb crisps and a safe code that lets you open two wine safes along the way.

Trails on the Ottenberg

Weinfelden lies at the foot of the Ottenberg, surrounded by vineyards, well-kept countryside, floodplain forests and renaturalised streams. The area is ideal for hiking and cycling. Suggested routes include the Thur Trail to Bischofszell, the Surveying Trail to Nollen and the route over the Stählibuck to Frauenfeld. The compact town itself is easy to explore on foot.

The “Over the Ottenberg” hiking route starts at the train station, passes through the centre and follows a varied high-level trail over the Ottenberg and through the hamlet of Alp towards Berg. Unlike the wine trail, its focus is on crossing the town and the high-level trail, while the nine-kilometre loop puts winegrowing centre stage, with information boards along the way. Weinfelden is considered a region for food and wine, with a wide variety of wines, local vintners and restaurants. Wines and products are available directly from wineries and restaurants.

Local history and architecture

Two political milestones place Weinfelden in the history of Thurgau. In the spring of 1798, the Thurgau liberation movement began in the town hall square. In the autumn of 1830, two public assemblies were held in Weinfelden, contributing to the introduction of a new Thurgau cantonal constitution. Together, the dates mark the start of a movement and later assemblies that led to a constitution. Just over three decades lie between them.

Public and private historical tours and talks explore the town’s history. Signs describe numerous important buildings, and a map lists these descriptions. The Bürgerarchiv opens at regular intervals for events on historical themes related to Weinfelden’s past. The offerings take different forms: you can encounter history on tours and at talks, at the buildings themselves, and at events hosted by the archive.

Park and Thur Baths

Above the old town, Haffter Park and Komitee Park are designed with biodiversity in mind. The Thur Baths, also known as the “Badi,” are a place for sport and recreation for the people of Weinfelden. In the spring of 2023, the children’s pool on the western side of the bathing complex was renovated and expanded with a spray park. The children’s playground is also located there; another playground is on the eastern side, next to the kiosk.
