Romanshorn lies on the southern shore of Lake Constance and combines a harbour, lakeside path and railway history with attractions for a range of interests. The Lake Constance ferry runs hourly year-round between Friedrichshafen and Romanshorn; the crossing takes 45 minutes. As timetables may change, check the connection before your trip. Romanshorn is a political municipality and town in the canton of Thurgau and belongs to the district of Arbon.

Harbour Tour and Lake Views

For an outing on the water, consider a harbour tour aboard the MS Zeppelin. It lasts around 90 minutes and is seasonal, so check in advance whether it is running during your stay. Local guides explain the development of the harbour, Romanshorn’s transport history and life by the lake. The focus may vary depending on the departure. Along the way, the route passes, among other places, the ferry harbour, the lighthouse, Inseli, the shipyard and the beacon; seasonal route changes are possible.

If you would rather stay on shore, you can include the Lake Constance lakeside path in your plans. It runs from Kreuzlingen along the shore of Lake Constance to Romanshorn. The landscape includes wild-growing plants, trees and dense shrubs, as well as barren stretches of shore and occasional jetties. Along the way, the path passes numerous lidos and picnic spots. This lets you explore the lakeside scenery in its own right, without confusing it with a trip on the lake.

Romanshorn lido adds another way to enjoy the water, with three swimming pools, a waterslide, a current pool, a whirlpool and a diving tower. There is also a shallow-water area with a jetty, as well as places to relax and opportunities for activities in the water. Check the lido’s latest information before your visit.

Vehicles and Railway Heritage

Romanshorn offers two distinct ways to explore transport history: autobau Erlebniswelt presents racing and sports cars, as well as classic and vintage cars, in five exhibition halls. It is located right on the Lake Constance Cycle Path. Locorama, by contrast, is dedicated to railways: its collection includes historic steam and electric locomotives, postal, passenger and freight cars, Signal Box II, a turntable and a former signal bridge. Locorama is housed in the former SBB locomotive shed, at the site where the railway arrived in 1855. Visitors can also try a locomotive driver simulator there; check in advance to find out what is currently on offer.

City History, Guided Tours and Art

Romanshorn was first mentioned in 779 or 782 under the name Rumanishorn. At the time, Waldrata donated her property there to the Abbey of St. Gall. Cultural tours explore the city’s history and culture, with themes ranging from the historic castle to contemporary art. As individual tour dates may change, it is worth checking the schedule before your trip.

You can also discover public art in Seepark. Franz Fischer’s bronze sculpture Woman with Fish dates from 1966. The park is also home to Kurt Laurenz Metzler’s group of figures with five chrome-steel sails, dating from 1987. Romanshorn Museum focuses on a fascinating period in the village’s history and the development of transport on and around Lake Constance. These attractions offer different perspectives: outdoor art, themed city tours, and the history of transport and the lake.

Weekly Market and Recurring Events

The Romanshorn weekly market takes place on Fridays from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m.; the stated market hours may change. Depending on the season, local products are available directly from producers, including vegetables, fruit, berries, eggs, fish, cheese, bread and pastries. If you are planning a visit to the market, check the latest opening times.

Recurring events include Romanshorner Lenz, held on the last Sunday in April. The traditional annual fair takes place on the fourth Wednesday in October. As programme changes may affect the dates, check the specific dates before your trip. Romanshorn also has a tradition of holding a Christmas market on Alleestrasse, decorated with fir trees.
