Wildhaus brings together a range of themes for your trip: history and sound take centre stage at the Zwingli House and along the Sound Trail, while the Schönenbodensee offers a moorland landscape and bathing facilities. Gamplüt adds summer hiking trails and Alpine cheese. These highlights can help you decide whether Wildhaus suits your travel interests.

History and sound

The Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of St. Gallen keeps the Zwingli House open to visitors from around the world. It was built in the mid-15th century by the grandfather of the Reformer. Despite various alterations, its basic structure has been preserved to this day. A visit can therefore be combined with a look at the building’s history.

The Sound Trail runs from Alp Sellamatt via Iltios to Oberdorf. It is accessible by cable car from Wildhaus and Alt St. Johann. The trail features 27 installations by renowned national and international sound artists. Both the route and the art installations are therefore relevant when planning your visit. As access and seasonal operations may change, check the current cable car timetables in advance.

Schönenbodensee and Wildenburg

Schönenbodensee is situated in a protected moorland landscape. Its bathing facility has been open since 1930 and has a large jetty; pedalos are also available for hire at the lake. The bathing season depends on the time of year, and pedalo availability may vary. If you plan to swim or go for a ride on a pedalo, check the current facilities before your visit.

From this starting point, the ruins of Wildenburg Castle can be reached via a farm road. At Wildenburg, a metal staircase leads to the remains of the keep, from where you can enjoy a lovely view. A small supply of firewood is available at the barbecue area by the site. So, at the lake the focus is on spending time by the water, while Wildenburg offers a glimpse of the local castle ruins.

Gamplüt: Hiking and Alpine cheese

In summer, Gamplüt has many popular hiking trails with beautiful views. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out. Gamplüt can be reached by the Gamplüt-Bähnli, one of the world’s first solar-powered gondola lifts.

The Gamplüt Alpine cheese dairy offers something different: it makes Alpine cheese on site and shows visitors the newly built dairy and the new alpine cowshed. Those interested in how regional foods are made will find a different focus here than on hiking trails or cultural attractions.

Activities in Eggewäldli and Munzenriet

Eggewäldli has a mini-golf course. Equipment is available for a fee at the Eggewäldli kiosk. The skills park can be used for a voluntary contribution. The Bike Academy Toggenburg offers cycling skills courses for visitors of all ages, bookable from May to October. If you have a specific course in mind, check current availability.

The curling hall in Eggewäldli has four rinks and offers rink hire, courses, seminars and tournaments. These activities differ considerably from mini-golf and cycling skills: the focus here is on curling and organised events. Availability of rentals and programmes may change, so check before making specific plans.

The Toggenburg pump track is in Munzenriet in Wildhaus, opposite the curling centre or ice rink. The location is clear: the pump track is in Munzenriet. Along with the various activities in Eggewäldli, it complements Wildhaus’s cultural, scenic and culinary offerings.
