Libingen is a village in the municipality of Mosnang in Toggenburg, in eastern Switzerland, and has around 300 residents. It lies in a western side valley of the Thur, on a terrace above the Dietfurterbach stream and at the foot of the Kreuzegg. Via the Kreuzegg, you can reach the Linth region and the upper end of Lake Zurich.
Hiking: Routes, Duration and Views
A moderately difficult hiking route leads from Wattwil to Libingen over 9.6 kilometres; the stated walking time is 3 hours and 45 minutes. Just before Libingen, there is a steep ravine that can become slippery when wet. Before setting out, check the trail surfaces and current route conditions, especially for this section.
The hike from Atzmännig to Libingen is listed as 13.8 kilometres and 4 hours and 45 minutes. Based on the stated figures, it is 4.2 kilometres and one hour longer than the route from Wattwil. It ends at the Libingen, Dorf bus stop. Before departing, check the route and public transport conditions.
The two routes also differ in their scenery: Chellenspitz on the Wattwil route offers excellent views of the Säntis, the Churfirsten and the Glarus Alps. The hike from Atzmännig to Libingen offers views of Lake Zurich, the Glarus Alps, the Alpstein range with the Säntis, and as far as Lake Constance. Visibility on both routes depends on the weather. Libingen is also a starting point for hikes towards Chrüzegg, Schnebelhorn and Hulftegg.
Church, Monastery History and Village Life
The Baroque Church of St Gall was completed in 1769. Its furnishings include a statue of Saint Gall and an 18th-century baptismal font. Libingen was first mentioned in a document in 1416. A small convent for women stood north of the church’s choir and bell tower from 1754 to 1781; it was demolished in 1782. The church was therefore completed while the convent was still in existence.
Village life is also shaped by an active association scene; the Libingen Music Society is particularly prominent. Together with the church’s history, this local perspective offers a different focus from the hikes in the surrounding area.
Museum and Village Amenities
The Rösslischür houses a Trychle, bells and midwifery museum. The Rösslischür is open from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month, from March to October; check the opening hours before visiting.
Dorflade Libige offers fresh produce, other groceries and sandwiches. Its range and offerings may change; check what is currently available before your trip. The Rössli inn and bakery makes its own pear bread. If you are making a special trip for it, check availability in advance.
If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Libingen, the museum’s opening days and your planned hiking days may help determine when to travel. The two routes described involve walks lasting several hours, while the Rösslischür is open during a recurring Sunday time slot. First check which museum date works for you, then fit the hike into your stay.
