Ganterschwil can be explored through a circular trail, a historic village centre and the landscape between the Thur and Necker rivers. These themes are clearly distinct for planning a trip: the “Bruedertöbeli” adventure trail forms a loop through several named hamlets, while the parish church, bridges and farming Upper Village offer insights into the built character of the locality. If you are looking for accommodation in Ganterschwil, you can first decide whether hiking, architectural history or the landscape should be the main focus of your stay.
The circular trail through the Bruedertöbeli
The adventure trail starts and ends at the Alte Post. From there, it runs along Toggenburgerstrasse and the turn-off towards Ötschwil into the Bruedertöbeli, then on to Äwil, Berg and Stocken, before returning to the starting point. Along the way are a small chapel, a roaring waterfall, a cave and a fire pit. The Maria Magdalena Chapel was built in 1995 in honour of the hermits who once lived here; it adds a specific historical connection to the scenic impressions along the trail.
For orientation, note that the adventure trail is not specially signposted: hikers should follow the general yellow hiking signs. The listed public transport stops for the trail are “Alte Post”, “Hirschen” and “Oetschwilerstrasse”, served by post buses. Parking is available at the Alte Post. Before setting out, check the trail conditions and signs, as well as the public transport and parking information.
Village centre and bridges
The old parish church stands in the centre of the historic village. Its clearly visible tower with a pointed spire forms the village’s architectural focal point. The historic village centre and the farming Upper Village include buildings dating from the 17th to the early 20th century. Those interested in different types of architecture will also find two distinctive bridges: the Anzenwil wooden bridge, built in 1862, is a regionally significant cultural asset. The Lochermoos Bridge, built in 1991, has a distinctive design: its wide pedestrian and cycle path is positioned outside the arches. The bridges thus bring together historical significance and a striking architectural solution.
High plateau and landscape
Ganterschwil lies on a high plateau between the Thur and Necker rivers. The locality includes numerous isolated farmsteads as well as the hamlets of Äwil, Anzenwil, Bleiken, Ötschwil and Tobel. The locality lies at about 606 metres above sea level; its elevation ranges from 547 to 880 metres above sea level. These figures give an idea of the area’s elevation, while the names of the hamlets and farmsteads show that Ganterschwil extends beyond the village centre.
Hikers and mountain bikers can enjoy an extensive network of forest, meadow and field paths in the municipality of Bütschwil-Ganterschwil. There are also places to linger and enjoy the scenery along the Thur and Necker landscapes. This wider municipal setting complements the specifically described circular trail through the Bruedertöbeli with other landscape and trail themes, without implying a particular route connecting them.
