Thermal springs, hiking trails and public art give Bad Ragaz a variety of reasons to visit. The municipality lies in the Sarganserland, at the foot of the Pizol massif and on the banks of the Rhine. When planning a stay, you can focus on wellness, mountain trails or local culture—and combine these themes according to your interests.

Thermal Water and Relaxation

The Tamina Therme has eight pools covering a total of 7,300 square metres. Its sauna area includes seven saunas inspired by Finnish wellness traditions. Treatments on offer include massages, haki®, Shiatsu and pedicures; the availability of individual treatments may change. The spa therefore offers a range of ways to plan a visit around water, saunas or a treatment.

The thermal springs made Bad Ragaz well known at an early date. With the construction of modern bathing facilities, the town developed into a health and wellness destination in the 19th century. Today’s spa is part of the area’s long history with thermal water.

Hiking at Pizol and in the Valley

The summer hiking area at Pizol stretches from the valley floor to the 2,844-metre summit. More than 120 kilometres of hiking trails and five modern gondola and chairlift lines in summer shape the range of options. Heidi’s MEDIUM Trail is rated moderate, is 7.7 kilometres long and begins with a gondola ride from Bad Ragaz to the starting point at Pardiel.

Another described hike starts at the Bad Ragaz valley station, where a gondola takes you to Pardiel. From there, the route follows the Heidi Trail to the Schwarzbüel viewpoint, with views across four countries, and continues through a raised bog landscape to Vilterser Seeli. The stated walking time for this route is around two hours. While the length and difficulty rating of Heidi’s MEDIUM Trail provide a guide, this tour is described by its approximate walking time. Check route details and seasonal lift operations before your trip.

The valley also has trails with clear destinations: a four-kilometre hiking trail leads from Bad Ragaz along the Tamina to the Old Baths of Pfäfers. In the surrounding area, a secured path leads from there 450 metres deep into the rock to the spring-water grotto of the Tamina Gorge. You can also walk along the Tamina Promenade from Bad Ragaz to Giessenpark.

Art, Village History and Notable Places

Bad Ragartz is a Swiss sculpture triennial, and its 2027 anniversary edition looks back on 27 years of public art. The tenth edition is planned as an open-air art trail featuring more than 400 sculptures, running from 1 May to 31 October 2027. As this is a future programme, check the dates and final offering before your trip.

The Bad Ragaz culture and village tour offers an expert guided tour of the historic village. It also explores the historical connection between Ragaz and the Benedictine Abbey of Pfäfers, and is suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Golf offers another way to engage with the area’s history: it has been played in Bad Ragaz since 1905, with a break during the Second World War. The Bad Ragaz Golf Club has an 18-hole championship course.

A prominent landmark, Freudenberg Castle Ruins stand on a rocky hill about 84 metres high, roughly one kilometre northwest of Bad Ragaz. They are considered a symbol of the valley, especially from Bad Ragaz. Giessenpark adds a quieter natural setting to the trails around town: it is described as a green oasis with a natural lake.
