Oensingen brings together several distinct reasons to visit: Neu-Bechburg Castle above the village, recurring festivals, the parish church of St. George, and the mountain scenery of Ravellenflue and Chluser Roggen. Depending on whether you focus on history, a special event date or the landscape, your trip will have a different emphasis.

Neu-Bechburg Castle and Event Dates

Neu-Bechburg Castle towers above Oensingen and has a history spanning more than 750 years. Guided tours of the castle can be booked on request. Public events are held there approximately from mid-April to mid-November. This time span is approximate, and the programme may change in the future; if you are travelling specifically for an event, check the exact date.

Festivals with Different Schedules

The Midsummer Festival takes place in Oensingen every three years and continues an old tradition of sun worship. It features bonfires on the heights and a large fireworks display. The fireworks last about 60 minutes and include more than 100 bonfires on the heights. This makes the Midsummer Festival a special event, but one that does not take place every year.

By contrast, the Oensingen Zibelimäret takes place every year on the last full weekend in October. The autumn market features various specialities and plenty of onions, especially in plaited form. Since 1968, the Zibelimäret has been a living expression of tradition, regional ties and cultural exchange. The difference in frequency is useful when planning your trip: the market returns annually, while the Midsummer Festival takes place only every three years.

Church History Across Different Periods

The parish church of St. George is protected at cantonal level. Its choir dates from 1644; a predecessor church was mentioned as early as 968. The two dates refer to different periods in the church’s history: the early mention of a predecessor church and the date of the choir. If you are interested in historic architecture, St. George adds another architectural-history highlight in Oensingen to your visit to the castle.

Mountain Scenery and Hiking Trails

The mountain landscape of “Ravellenflue and Chluser Roggen” lies approximately half in the area of Oensingen and half in the municipality of Balsthal. Its significant geological formations and rich biological diversity are why it is listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance. Geology and biological diversity give this landscape a character of its own alongside the historic buildings and festivals.

A hiking map published by the Oensingen Municipal Corporation includes ten varied routes to Oensingen’s local mountain and through the surrounding area. This puts a choice of named routes at the heart of the landscape-focused side of your trip, while the castle and church appeal to other interests.

Oensingen and Its Railway Connections

Oensingen is a political municipality and the main town of the Gäu district in the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. Oensingen railway station is served by trains operated by SBB, the Oensingen-Balsthal Railway (OeBB) and, since 2012, following the reconstruction of the metre-gauge Niederbipp–Oensingen connection, by Aare Seeland mobil. Thus, alongside its historic and natural attractions, the town also has a specific railway connection to consider when planning your journey.
