A walk at the forest lodge, Neolithic and Roman finds, and a church dating from 1754 introduce Härkingen’s varied themes: nature, early settlement and architectural history. If you are looking for accommodation in the village, you can match these highlights to your own travel interests.

Forest, Jura range and nature education

Härkingen is part of the Gäu district and lies 435 metres above sea level. The surrounding area includes forest and the southern foothills of the Jura range, which offer opportunities for recreation. The village has an interactive forest nature trail. The short walk starts at the forest lodge; along the way, visitors learn about native tree and shrub species.

The Härkingen Nature and Bird Conservation Association offers public nature excursions and lectures, and also focuses on the forest nature trail. As well as the short walk, visitors can choose from the association’s nature-themed activities.

Golf and open training sessions

Visitors can try golf at the Härkingen Driving Range. The facility has six covered and eleven outdoor hitting bays. It welcomes beginners and experienced golfers alike; you are also welcome if you do not have your own clubs. As information about the facility may change, it is worth checking the operator’s latest information before your visit.

In addition, TV Härkingen offers open training sessions in trampolining, Zumba Workout and “Join In – Stay Fit”. These activities are also open to non-members. Check the training times separately if a particular class is important to your travel plans.

Early traces and local history

Archaeological finds date back a long way: Neolithic remains were discovered on Buchenrain, and Roman finds near Grenzweg in the direction of Neuendorf. They attest to early settlement in the municipality of Härkingen. The village is first mentioned in a document dated 7 December 1080, in a deed of donation issued in Speyer by Emperor Henry IV.

The history of the church also has several notable milestones. The Roman Catholic Church of St John was built in 1754 and is considered a monument of significant art-historical value. The new Johanneskirche is in the village centre. The Old Church at Hauptgasse 26 is part of the architectural heritage of the Canton of Solothurn. In 1805, Härkingen became ecclesiastically independent from Egerkingen and established its own parish.

The Fröschenfest is a more recent feature of village life: its 21st edition took place in the village centre on the weekend of 9 and 10 August 2019; another edition was held in 2025. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the latest dates before choosing your travel dates.

Location for planning your trip

Härkingen is well connected by road, with larger cities reachable in a short time.
