Riemenstalden is a municipality in the canton of Schwyz and belongs to the district of Schwyz. The mountain scenery, trails towards LidernenhĂĽtte, alpine culture and historic churches are what shape the picture for a trip. This lets you plan your stay around different interests: you can focus on a mountain hike, take an interest in cheesemaking and alpine traditions, or make church architecture and frescoes your main focus. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide which of these interests matters most to you.
Mountain Scenery and Trails
The hiking landscape between Riemenstalden and Lidernen includes moorland, forests, karst alpine meadows, open alpine pastures and distinctive karst rock formations. The Huser Stock–Klingenstock area features managed wild hay meadows, as well as numerous dry meadows and pastures. Together, these details describe a landscape where alpine pastures and karst are as much a part of it as forests and moorland.
The destination is key when choosing a specific tour. A SAC normal route leads from Chäppeliberg in the Riemenstalden valley to the Lidernenhütte SAC and is rated WS+. The climb from Chäppeliberg to the hut takes 1 to 1.5 hours and covers 550 metres of elevation gain. This rating applies to this route; mountain conditions vary by season and should be taken into account when planning. A hiking route starts in Riemenstalden at the valley station of the Chäppeliberg-Spilau cable car and also continues to the Lidernenhütte. The Chaiserstock–Fulen–Rossstock route is rated T4.
There is also specific guidance for planning a winter trip: the ascent towards Schniärstock passes the Lidernenhütte in one hour. Seasonal route details may change; check them before setting out. In good snow conditions, a long descent to Muotathal is possible. This option depends on the snow conditions.
Getting to Riemenstalden
The road route is via the Axenstrasse; at Sisikon, turn off towards Riemenstalden. A PostBus runs twice a day between Sisikon railway station and Riemenstalden, Chäppeliberg. If you plan to use this connection, check the departure times before travelling and time the start of your tour accordingly. This helps you account for the connection between the railway station and your starting point when planning your day.
Alpine Cheese and Tradition
For four generations, the alpine cheese from Alp Spilau has been made by hand according to old traditions, using milk from horned cows and methods that are as close to nature as possible. Visitors can sample alpine cheese at the Alp-Beizli. So, alongside the trails, there is also a specific culinary experience to consider when planning your trip.
The Betruf, a daily evening prayer of thanks, is part of the cultural heritage of Alp Spilau-Seeli. The text and melody vary from one alpine pasture to another. The version in question was first written down in 1995 and passed down from father to son over several generations. Written documentation and oral transmission are two distinct aspects of this same inherited prayer tradition.
Churches and Historical Details
The parish church of Maria zum Guten Rat in Riemenstalden is known for its frescoes. The present-day church was built from 1789 to 1793 to plans by Martin Ă–lgass of Einsiedeln. The ceiling paintings were created in 1932 by the painter Joseph Schilter of Schwyz. The construction and decoration therefore took place in different historical periods. Anyone interested in church art can consider these two aspects of the building separately.
Chäppeliberg also has a historical landmark: the Chapel of St. John the Baptist dates from 1708. Alongside the parish church, other religious buildings add to the cultural side of Riemenstalden.
Accommodation and Trip Planning
When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth considering both your planned activities and the specific location of each accommodation. The routes to the mountain huts, the PostBus timetable and the historic churches offer different points of reference. Compare the location of the accommodation with what you actually plan to do during your stay.
