Oberiberg is in the district of Schwyz in the canton of Schwyz, Switzerland, on the Ibergereggstrasse between Einsiedeln and Schwyz. The village lies at around 1,130 metres in a sunny high valley, characterised by forests, alpine meadows and streams and surrounded by mountain scenery. Rural tranquillity and a traditional village character define the place. For planning, short circular walks, trails with named routes and seasonal winter activities can be considered as different options.
Activities and Trails for Different Plans
The larch-wood marble run in Oberiberg adds a playful activity to your itinerary: on several sections, wooden marbles roll over obstacles, and visitors of all ages can race them. So, alongside hiking trails, there is also an activity in the village that combines movement with playful competition.
The adventure trail in the Oberiberg holiday village is a one-kilometre, stroller-friendly circular walk along the Minster River. There are barbecue areas along the way for breaks or a picnic. Another point of reference is the Adlerhorst: a marked trail leads there from the parking areas by the church or schoolhouse in about an hour. The one-kilometre adventure trail along the Minster is a good choice for a short walk with a stroller and a picnic break; the marked trail to the Adlerhorst takes about an hour from the parking areas by the church or schoolhouse.
Those interested in how the region’s mountain landscape was formed can explore the subject on the Geological Trail on the Roggenstock. It follows the route Oberiberg–Tubenmoos–Roggenegg–Fuederegg–Steinboden–Tschalun. Interactive stations share information about the formation of the Ybrig mountains. The trail therefore combines a specific sequence of places with a geological theme.
Mountain Scenery and Seasonal Options
From the Laucheren mountain station, a narrow hiking trail passes over meadows of yellow-blooming arnica and by gnarled spruce trees. With a little luck, you may spot marmots there. Another hiking route goes via Isentobel towards the Laucheren Chapel and past the Isentobel alpine hut. From Laucheren, arnica meadows and gnarled spruce trees shape the trail, while the Laucheren Chapel and the Isentobel alpine hut serve as landmarks along the route via Isentobel.
In winter, you can choose from various activities. A toboggan run leads from Laucheren to Oberiberg and is designed for all age groups. Marked snowshoe trails start from Oberiberg and Ibergeregg; they are suitable for beginners as well as experienced snowshoers. The toboggan run is designed for all age groups, while the snowshoe trails are suitable for both beginners and experienced snowshoers. As the toboggan run operates seasonally and snowshoe trail conditions vary by season, check the current situation when planning a winter outing.
Village History Across Several Periods
Oberiberg has a medieval history shaped by alpine farming. Tourism developed after the place was discovered as a health resort. In 1938, a ski lift was built in Oberiberg—at the time, only the third in Switzerland. The religious buildings also mark specific historical dates: a mass chapel in Yberg, which later became the parish church, received episcopal consecration on 13 April 1350. The Church of St. John in Oberiberg was consecrated on 15 October 1876, and the Chapel of Our Lady in autumn 1880. The Lourdes Grotto was built from 1949 to 1951 and consecrated on 7 October 1951.
Whether you are interested in village history, a stroller-friendly circular walk, geological stations or seasonal activities, Oberiberg offers different starting points for planning. The trails vary in length, route, theme and season; choose the focus that suits your stay.
