Between the Linth Plain and Buechberg, Tuggen brings together natural areas, trails and historic sites. The municipality lies at the upper end of Lake Zurich, in the March district of the canton of Schwyz. When planning your visit, you can focus on different things: observing nature, exploring the landscape or discovering the area’s history.

Landscape and nature

Buechberg is a molasse hill on the southeastern shore of the Upper Lake. Tuggen encompasses open areas of fields, woodland and rolling hills. The climate is temperate, with warm summers and relatively mild winters. The surrounding area offers a variety of landscapes, from open spaces to woodland and wetlands.

Ammesmoos, a large forest bog, lies in Buechberg. Toads can be observed at the pond there, and with a little luck you may also spot grass snakes. Bätzimatt offers a different natural setting: its cantonal protected areas include wetland meadows and reed beds along the lakeshore. Plants found in Bätzimatt include irises and orchids. The two areas offer different points of interest for anyone interested in wetlands and their plant and animal life.

Trails through the area

The circular trails in Tuggen offer a nature experience for all ages. Near Schrötermoos, a forest educational trail has a circular route that takes about 45 minutes. The Obersee Discovery Trail starts at the “Gallusplatz” bus stop in Tuggen and leads through Buechberg towards Grynau and Uznach. It features a treasure hunt with a discovery backpack. Check how the backpack is issued before your tour, as the arrangements may change.

Near Grynau, the discovery trail crosses the Linth Bridge to bathing spots along the Linth. Whether swimming is an option may depend on the season and local rules. The route thus combines a stretch through Buechberg with a section along the Linth, while the circular trail near Schrötermoos forms a separate loop of about 45 minutes.

Local history and culture

Tuggen’s settlement history dates back to a documented mention in 844. The historic parish church and traditional buildings shape the townscape. The Loretto Chapel in Chromen is also a place where traditions are kept alive: every spring, the Chromen Festival is held there with a solemn church service. Another annual event is the motorcycle blessing organised by MC March-Höfe at the Betti site. It has taken place every year on the third Sunday in May since 1997.

The Linth Works Exhibition is housed in a former workshop building of the Linth Works, next to the historic Grynau Tower in Tuggen. This open-air museum along the Escher and Linth canals presents the history of the Linth Works and flood protection, as well as information about local flora and fauna. Its interpretive features include stelae, information panels and illustrated bunkers.

The former Grynau military fortress has been preserved true to its original form, with equipment from the Second World War, and can be visited by prior arrangement. The infantry fortress was built in 1940/42 as an advanced position of the 7th Division. Its role was to block and protect the Linth Bridge at Grynau/Tuggen. A visit to the fortress is therefore a good fit for anyone interested in military history; please arrange your visit in advance.
