Lake Hirschlensee reveals a special side of Reichenburg: the lake was created in the 1960s and 1970s in connection with gravel extraction for the construction of the N3 motorway. People swim and fish in the lake. Together with the Gnossami Circular Trail, the Gwerderwald barbecue area, and the routes to Kistleralp and along Buechberg, the municipality offers tangible ways to enjoy nature, get active and explore local history.

Between the Linth Plain and the foothills of the Alps

Reichenburg is a political municipality in the March district of the canton of Schwyz, Switzerland. It lies at the edge of the foothills of the Alps; the municipal area extends across the southern Linth Plain and the southern mountain slopes. At 1,455 metres, Lauihöhe is the highest point in the municipality. As of 2006, 56.5 percent of the area was used for agriculture and 34.3 percent was forested. If you plan to swim in Lake Hirschlensee, check the safety conditions before getting in the water.

Hiking trail and circular trail

The Gwerderwald barbecue area lies above the village at around 570 m above sea level, right on the official hiking route. You can reach it on foot from the multi-purpose building in about 25 minutes. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit. The Gnossami Circular Trail was created to mark the 550th anniversary of the Reichenburg cooperative. It offers views of the village and includes, among other things, a barefoot trail.

Two different cycling tours

For fit cyclists, the bike tour to Kistleralp takes about an hour and covers around 9 kilometres and 750 metres of elevation gain. The route offers views of Reichenburg, the Linth Plain and Lake Zurich. Experienced cyclists can extend it towards Sonnenberg and then onwards towards Niederen; check the trail conditions in advance if you plan to take this option. The Buechberg tour has a different profile: it starts and ends in Reichenburg, covers 20 kilometres and 200 metres of elevation gain, and takes about 1.5 hours. By comparison, it is longer but has considerably less elevation gain; the Kistleralp tour is shorter and has more elevation gain.

Local history and the cantonal fair

The Catholic church is a landmark of the municipality, located on the castle hill in the middle of the village. Its interior is one of the few examples in the canton of Schwyz of a church interior in the style of unadorned modernism. The former ossuary in Reichenburg dates from 1660/61 and is one of the buildings from the transition between late Gothic and early Baroque architecture. The Peace Chapel was completely renovated in 2009.

Traditionally, the Reichenburg cantonal fair takes place every year on the weekend of the second Sunday in October. The fairground has showmen and rides; there are also activities offered by clubs, the school and private individuals. As the programme varies from year to year, check the specific date and activities before travelling.
