A Baroque village church, a building whose core dates back to the 16th century, and distinctive hiking landscapes give Wollerau a varied character. If you are planning an overnight stay in the municipality, you can choose between local history, longer hikes, and water and sports activities. For practical planning, consider not only your interests but also the duration of the route, visits arranged in advance and changing opening hours.
Baroque Architecture and Local History
The parish church of St. Verena is a Baroque village church, built between 1781 and 1785. It is considered an early work by architect Nikolaus Purtscher; the interior paintings are by the prominent Messmer family of painters. The church is considered to be of exceptionally high cultural, historical, architectural and art-historical value. Its construction and paintings offer two perspectives on the same building: Baroque church architecture and its artistic decoration.
At the Gmuret Hus, the historical perspective reaches further back: the two-storey stone building has distinctive stepped gables, and its core dates back to the 16th century. The house is also considered to be of considerable cultural, historical and art-historical value, and to have a significant impact on the local townscape. Compared with the Baroque church, its particular historical reference point is its older building core; the two buildings thus give local history distinct points of emphasis.
The Wollerau Fire Brigade Museum displays historical tools and documents from the founding period of the Wollerau fire brigade. It also houses an old hand-operated fire pump from 1876, which is still functional; its operating condition may change. Visits are possible by appointment. If the hand pump is a particular reason for your visit, arrange a time and ask about its current condition beforehand.
Hiking and Getting Around
The route through the Green Belt is 10.4 kilometres long, takes approximately two and a half hours and is of moderate difficulty. Its length, approximate duration and difficulty provide different points of reference for fitting the hike into your stay. The Wollerau-Becki-Erlenmoos circular route offers a different landscape: it passes through a varied cultural landscape featuring a slope fen.
The circular route can be reached by train or bus to Wollerau railway station. Check connections before departure, as they may change. Bicycle parking is available at the station. The ZURICH vitaparcours starts next to the football pitch. As the starting point may change, check it before setting off.
Leisure, Water and Events
Erlenmoos Leisure Park covers more than 30,000 square metres. It has a skate park, a bike park and a nature-oriented playground. The facilities cater to different interests: activities on a skateboard or bicycle, as well as a nature-oriented play area. At Strandweg, there is a small bathing area with around 150 metres of lake frontage. This adds a swimming spot to the sports and play facilities as a different kind of attraction.
Farfar Ice Camp Wollerau has an ice rink and offers ice hockey. Opening hours and public access times may change, so check them in advance if the Ice Camp is part of your plans. Events can also be a deciding factor when planning a trip: Wollerau’s Culture and Sports Commission puts together a varied programme each year, and the Culture and Sports Office ensures that the Chilbi fair and Christmas market take place. Check the relevant dates if you would like to plan your trip around an event.
