Freienbach is a political municipality in the Höfe district of the canton of Schwyz, Switzerland; Pfäffikon SZ is its largest locality. There are several themes to choose from when planning your trip: the Frauenwinkel nature reserve, the Freienbach-Pfäffikon circular trail and Ufnau Island. They offer different ways to experience the landscape around Lake Zurich—from a clearly described route to nature watching and a boat trip to an island.
Frauenwinkel: nature reserve and reed beds
Frauenwinkel is the largest contiguous nature reserve on Lake Zurich. Its open landscape forms the lake’s last large undeveloped stretch of shoreline; Frauenwinkel is also home to the largest reed beds on Lake Zurich. The nature reserve is a few minutes’ walk from Pfäffikon SZ railway station. Local construction work may change footpaths, so check access if you plan to take this short walk.
There is a birdwatching tower below the Steinfabrik site. In spring, you may be able to spot reed buntings there and hear great reed warblers in the reeds. These sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed, so the birds are a possible bonus on your visit, not something you can count on seeing.
Walking between Freienbach and Pfäffikon
The Freienbach-Pfäffikon circular trail starts at Freienbach SBB railway station and runs close to the lake. The route is 5.0 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 92 metres and takes about 1.25 hours; its difficulty level is moderate. Along the way, there are benches, a forest sofa, barbecue areas and viewpoints where you can stop and relax. This means the route combines a clearly stated walking time with several places to take a break or enjoy the views.
The starting point for this loop is in Freienbach. The short walk to Frauenwinkel nature reserve, however, starts at Pfäffikon SZ railway station. These different starting points are useful when planning your excursions: the circular trail is a route in its own right, while Pfäffikon railway station marks the access point to the nature reserve.
Ufnau: an island visit with a seasonal boat service
Ufnau Island, also known as Ufenau, is a nature reserve in Lake Zurich. From April to October, it can be reached by boat from Pfäffikon SZ in about ten minutes. Check the timetable for your planned visit. A path around the island’s shoreline takes approximately half an hour.
The times represent two different parts of the trip: the boat journey from Pfäffikon SZ to the island takes about ten minutes, while the walk around the island takes approximately half an hour. By comparison, the Freienbach-Pfäffikon circular trail is a longer walking option at about 1.25 hours. Ufnau is also home to the present-day parish church of St. Peter and Paul, built on the foundations of a Gallo-Roman temple. This brings together a natural setting, an island path and a visible link to history within a compact area.
Traces of ancient crossings at Hurden Rosshorn
The Hurden Rosshorn archaeological site is in the shallow strait between Freienbach-Hurden and Rapperswil. Posts and structural timbers from various bridges and walkways dating from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages have been documented there. The site is an archaeological transport route, not a settlement. This classification draws attention to how the crossing was used: the strait between Rapperswil and the Hurden peninsula has been used as a crossing for 5,000 years.
These archaeological findings add another perspective on Lake Zurich to the nature and route options. At Hurden Rosshorn, the focus is on traces of transport across the strait, not the remains of a place where people lived. Frauenwinkel focuses on open shoreline and reeds; the circular trail and island path differ mainly in their starting points and stated walking times.
