Neunkirch is located in the Klettgau region, about 13 km from Schaffhausen, and is a municipality in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland. Several distinct themes come together for an exploration: guided town tours on medieval life, the Oberhof castle complex, a Vitaparcours fitness trail in the nature reserve, and the swimming pool. You can therefore plan your stay around culture, nature or swimming.

Guided Town Tours and Historical Traces

Several guided town tours bring medieval life in the small town to life. If you are planning a tour, check the dates for your visit in advance. Oberhof offers a different historical focus: as a castle complex, its history dates back to the town’s founding period. The comparison therefore highlights both life in the small town during the Middle Ages and the long history of a specific complex.

The town’s name also offers a linguistic and historical perspective. Neunkirch is explained as meaning “New Church.” Historical forms of the name include Niuchilchun, Nuinchilchen, Niunchilchen, Nüwenkilch, Nükilch and Nünkilch. The different spellings add another layer of history to the name. Other historical traces relate to church construction: during excavation work, the semicircular apse of a small church from the post-Carolingian period was uncovered in the choir. An apse is the semicircular end of a church space.

The town’s political history offers another perspective. In 1525, the rule of the Bishops of Constance over Neunkirch came to an end. The heavily indebted diocese sold Neunkirch to Schaffhausen for 8,500 guilders. In February 1799, representatives of 22 municipalities in the canton of Schaffhausen met in Neunkirch’s municipal building to draft a memorial calling for equality between town and countryside. Thus, the end of a period of rule and a political demand for equality stand as distinct chapters.

The organ in the mountain church has 1,367 pipes—a precise detail that adds a musical connection to the political and linguistic themes.

Nature, Swimming and Getting There

The Vitaparcours fitness trail in Neunkirch is located in a nature reserve where oak trees are actively promoted to preserve a population of middle spotted woodpeckers. This gives the nature experience a specific species-conservation goal. Unlike the historical themes, the focus here is on promoting oak trees and preserving a bird population.

Neunkirch’s swimming pool welcomes people from Neunkirch and the surrounding area, both near and farther afield. The facilities include a diving board and water slides. Before planning a day of swimming, check the current seasonal opening arrangements locally. This adds a separate, seasonal focus to the cultural and nature-based activities.

Neunkirch railway station is part of the section in Switzerland of the German Rheintalbahn railway line, Mannheim–Basel Bad Bf–Constance. The station also has bicycle parking. Check the current timetable in advance for your specific train journey.
