Near Gächlingen, a trail leads far back in time: around 7,500 years ago, the oldest known farming settlement in Switzerland was founded here. At the same time, forests, vineyards and gorges shape Oberklettgau. Exploring the region means encountering archaeological evidence, medieval heritage and a varied landscape.

From the Stone Age to the Middle Ages

The Gächlingen-Goldäcker site is an Early and Middle Neolithic settlement. Excavations uncovered at least 23 buildings belonging to a Linear Pottery settlement. A Roman road is another historical trace in the area: it runs past the southern edge of Gächlingen. These remains span different periods, from early farming settlements to a Roman transport route.

In Neunkirch, history stretches back to the Middle Ages. The church dates from the early 14th century, and its choir contains frescoes. The tower was built in 1484 and houses the second-oldest bell in Switzerland. The Neunkirch Local History Museum offers further insight into the area’s past. It is open from May to September on the first Sunday of each month from 2 to 5 pm, and at other times by telephone appointment. Check opening hours before your visit, as they may change.

Further medieval traces can be found on the Siblinger Schlossranden. Parts of the fortifications and perimeter wall have survived, along with a cellar cut into the limestone. An observation tower stands on the plateau, offering far-reaching views across the Klettgau and over much of the Schaffhausen Randen. From Siblingen, a steep, signposted hiking trail leads uphill in about an hour on foot. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Forests, Hills and Trails

Oberklettgau is in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. The district covers 31.88 square kilometres and lies between 395 and 869 metres above sea level. Its landscape is shaped by the Randen hill range, extensive forests, vineyards, villages at higher elevations and deep gorges. Near Neunkirch, a diverse range of flora and fauna is part of the Klettgau landscape; the SĂĽdranden forest is a place to explore and unwind.

A network of hiking trails runs through varied terrain, including forests, vineyards and gorges. The Stieghütte on Hasenberg plays a special role in environmental education: renovated as a “forest discovery hut”, it supports environmental education on the Südranden under the motto “Experience Nature in the Forest”. Its facilities are designed for environmental education activities in all weather and in every season.

The treasure hunt in Neunkirch also combines exercise with historic sights. The route passes through and around the medieval town. Written materials and special clues help you find several stops. It can be booked from March to October; check current availability in advance.

Summer Vineyard Huts and an Event Date

During the summer months, Gächlingen’s winegrowers open their vineyard huts along the “Wii Stross”. They serve wines and regional specialities. The tradition brings winegrowing and regional cuisine together; opening dates and offerings may vary.

Oberhallau hosts an annual hill climb motor race. A 2019 municipal description gives the last weekend in August as the date and notes international participation and championship classifications. Check the latest event dates and programme before your trip.
