The trails in Schüpfheim range from the approximately one-hour, accessible Kulturweg to the 27.96-kilometre Farneren Tour. There is also the Oberberg Observatory and a museum featuring rural everyday life, traditional crafts and Flühli glass art. This offers a choice of different highlights: cultural history, astronomical observation and trails through the landscape.

The Observatory and Entlebuch Culture

On Geisshalde in Schüpfheim, the Oberberg Observatory offers astronomical observations with its self-built 2,400 mm Newtonian telescope; visitors can also learn about the history of the observatory. Public stargazing evenings are held once a month, and no registration is required. Guided tours are available year-round on request.

The local history museum in Entlebucherhaus showcases the distinctive features of Entlebuch cultural heritage across more than 1,000 m². Its exhibits cover rural everyday life, local crafts and valuable examples of Flühli glass art. The museum is a ten-minute walk from Schüpfheim train station.

The two cultural attractions offer different highlights: the observatory focuses on observations and its history, while the museum features everyday life, crafts and Flühli glass art. Access also differs, which is useful when planning: the museum is a ten-minute walk from the train station, while the Kulturweg offers its own walking route.

The Schüpfheim Kulturweg is an approximately one-hour, accessible circular route. Signs point the way wherever needed. Accessibility may depend on the weather, so check conditions before setting out.

Hiking and Mountain Biking Routes

The Schüpfheim–Farnere circular hike follows the old Frutteggweg, built in 1872/73 and regarded as one of the Entlebuch’s and wider region’s outstanding road-building monuments. In good visibility, the hike offers views of Schüpfheim, the expansive Napf region and the mountains of Entlebuch. The route is rated difficult and requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy footwear and alpine experience. Farneren is a mountain in the Emmental Alps with views of Schüpfheim in the canton of Lucerne.

Unlike the Schüpfheim–Farnere circular hike, the Emmenuferweg runs from Sörenberg through deep gorges and along high rock faces, descending into the main Entlebuch valley to Schüpfheim. Along the way, you pass through floodplain landscapes and protected moorland biotopes, where you can discover the wildlife and plant life of the UNESCO Entlebuch Biosphere. The two hikes thus differ in route and scenery: one offers views of the Napf region and mountains, while the other descends through gorges, floodplains and moorland biotopes.

For mountain bikers, the Farneren Tour is a scenic circular route around Schüpfheim’s local mountain. It is 27.96 km long, starts and ends at Schüpfheim train station, and follows the signs for marked mountain biking route 815 throughout.

When choosing a route, consider its format and difficulty: the Kulturweg and Farneren Tour are circular routes; the former is accessible and takes about an hour, while the latter is a 27.96 km mountain biking loop. Schüpfheim–Farnere is also a circular hike, but it is rated difficult; the Emmenuferweg descends from Sörenberg to Schüpfheim.
