Romoos combines a distinctive landscape with a living charcoal-making tradition and special opportunities for gold panning. Visitors planning a stay can discover different sides of the area: the Napf region, the play worlds of Zyberliland and a tradition that has become rare in Switzerland.

Landscape in the Napf Region

The Napf region near Romoos is characterised by deeply incised ravines, wooded steep slopes, narrow, elongated ridges, terraces and conglomerate peaks. These landscape features give the area its distinctive character. The wider area around Romoos offers extensive hiking trails and panoramic views from the Napf summit and viewpoint. The Entlebuch region is also characterised by rolling landscapes, moorland and diverse ecosystems.

Zyberliland and Gold Panning

Zyberliland is a nature play park in Romoos. Its various play worlds are connected by a hiking trail. There is also a special accommodation option there: guests can spend the night in straw. The information about Zyberliland thus brings together a nature play park, the paths between its play worlds and an overnight experience at one location.

Gold panning in the two Fontannen rivers is considered a tourist attraction in Romoos. Guides from Goldwaschen Romoos show visitors the best places to pan for gold in the streams around Romoos. If you are planning a guided tour, check availability before booking. This lets you include gold panning as a standalone experience in your travel plans, without equating it with a specific hiking route.

Charcoal Making and History

The charcoal burners of Romoos are the last in Switzerland to practise this traditional craft as a sideline to their mountain farming. Charcoal kilns are built and fired in Romoos from spring to autumn. Information boards along the charcoal burners’ trail provide details about charcoal making, gold prospectors and natural phenomena in the region. The trail thus combines insights into the craft tradition with topics related to nature and the landscape.

The church in Romoos also has a long history: it is documented in records dated 30 January 1184. Between 1666 and 1695, it received three valuable Baroque altars. In 2024, Romoos was selected by UN Tourism as a “Best Tourism Village”. The jury was impressed by its focus on the sustainable development of local tourism and by initiatives to preserve, promote and create value from its cultural heritage.

Hikes and Getting There
