Saulcy combines nature-based stays with specific hiking trails and a village history that is easy to explore. This small village of around 270 residents lies at the entrance to the Franches-Montagnes. It is considered a peaceful place in a natural setting; together with the nearby hamlet of La Racine, Saulcy is described as a destination for relaxing or active stays in the nature of the Franches-Montagnes.

Elevation, Views and Nature

Saulcy lies at an altitude of about 920 metres. From here, you can enjoy views of the sea of fog that regularly covers the Delémont Valley. The Étang de Bollement nature reserve extends across the areas of Saulcy and St-Brais. This brings several distinct landmarks together in the landscape: the elevated village, views across the valley and a protected area that encompasses both municipalities.

For a stay focused on hiking, there are numerous trails through Saulcy and its surroundings maintained by the local beautification association. Some also pass through the neighbouring municipalities of St-Brais, Lajoux, Rebévelier (BE) and Haute-Sorne. Named hiking routes include circuits along the Sentier de la Statue, the Combe Monjean, the Sentier de la Louvière, the Combe Tabeillon and La Saigne. Another trail leads past the Maison Blanche to Undervelier.

The “Saulcy – Sentier de la Statue – Combe Monjean – Saulcy” circular hike is 1,870 metres long. Another route, hike Ju-0034, follows the shore of the Étang de Bollement and then continues along a stream to the St-Brais–Saulcy road. When choosing a route, the circular hike offers a specific distance; Ju-0034 is distinguished above all by its sequence along the shore, beside the stream and up to the road.

Village History and Cultural Highlights

Saulcy’s church was built in 1820. Its current stained-glass windows were installed in 1889. The two dates therefore provide distinct points of reference for the building’s history, recording the construction of the church and the later installation of the windows. The Oratoire de la Racine offers further clearly defined details. It was built in 1977 and is dedicated to the Holy Trinity; its roof is shaped like an equilateral triangle.

The Temps de Rêves museum displays a private collection of more than 500 dolls. The scene in which they are presented changes with the seasons. This makes the focus of a visit different from that of the historic buildings: here, the collection and its changing display take centre stage. As well as its landscape, Saulcy therefore offers different ways to explore culture and local history, from architectural features to a doll display that changes seasonally.

Nearby and Local Highlights

In the vicinity of Saulcy, in the municipality of Haute-Sorne, the Chapelle de Bonembez stands beside a hiking trail. It offers hikers a place to stop and rest. The chapel was built in 1874 and blessed in 1876. Its anniversary is celebrated every year on 15 August with a Mass followed by a bring-your-own picnic. If you would like to plan your stay around this occasion, check the dates in advance.

Another local feature is the direct sale of produce at the Wermeille farm. Farm products and regional produce are available there, along with aperitif platters, premium eaux-de-vie and gift baskets. This adds a tangible glimpse of local offerings to the nature and culture themes, without requiring a separate excursion.
