Sagogn lies above the Rhine on the edge of the Ruinaulta. The Platta Pussenta cultural landscape and historic paths give the village a special connection to its landscape and local history. There are also churches, traces of castles and settlements, and hiking trails of varying lengths. You can tailor your stay to whether you want to discover historic details, outdoor trails or both.

Cultural Landscape and Historic Paths

Platta Pussenta is a near-natural cultural landscape that has been substantially influenced and shaped by people. Meadows, stone piles, field boundaries and terraces alternate with small oak woods, alders, fields, dry-stone walls, historic paths and old mills. There is also a diverse flora and fauna, including some very rare species. Twenty-seven of the 73 wild orchid species in Switzerland grow in the municipality of Sagogn; later surveys may change these figures.

The cup marks on Platta Pussenta are also part of the area’s history: they were made by people and are thought to have been created by a pre-Roman pagan people, possibly the Raetians. Two historic paths intersect beside the Platta. The old road through the Surselva ran from Laax to Schluein and was used until the 9th century. Another connecting path leads from Sagogn via Plaun Larisch, Runcal and Gonda to Falera.

The Mulin mill site illustrates the importance of earlier agriculture and forestry, as well as the pre-industrial processes of grain milling and wood sawing. The Rhine Gorge–Sagogn route (243) also has a historic connection: its high-level path was used as a transit road to the Grisons Oberland until the late Middle Ages.

Churches, Castles and Early Settlement Traces

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary is one of the best-preserved fully decorated early High Baroque churches north of the Alps. The present building resulted from a complete renovation carried out between 1634 and 1640 by a master builder from Ticino or the Misox. Its artworks include ceiling and wall paintings by Giovanni Battista Macholino from 1639. Beneath the gallery, on the south wall of the nave, you can also see a fragment with two High Gothic figures of saints dating from around 1370 to 1390. The Catholic church’s floor plan has remained unchanged for more than 1,500 years; the oldest predecessor church at the present site of the Church of Mary dates from the 4th or 5th century.

Sagogn’s Reformed church was built in 1743 and can be recognized by its onion-shaped spire. Casti Aspermont offers another perspective on the village’s history: by the 13th century, the castle had a mighty tower, and the core of its main western wing dates to before 1400. Casti is a defining feature of the village landscape of Vitg dado. In 1672, the Castelli family added an elegant hall building to the tower; its owners are significant to the history of the village.

Archaeological evidence on Schiedberg, east of Sagogn, documents continuous settlement from the Bronze Age to the High Middle Ages. The site includes the ruins of a High Medieval castle and remains of a surrounding fortification with an enclosing wall. At Bregl da Heida stands a Carolingian hall church with a horseshoe-shaped apse, identified as the Church of S. Columban mentioned in the 765 Tello Testament. The area is thought to have contained the civil and economic centre of the historic settlement.

Hiking Trails and Seasonal Experiences

The 3.5-kilometre Senda da Sagogn passes through historic and cultural sites near the village. Nine information panels share facts about Sagogn; the route leads up to the elevated Bregl plateau on the eastern edge. Two reclining benches there provide a place to rest, with views of the surrounding area. The trail starts at the Vitg dado PostBus stop by the school.

The Senda d’orchideas consists of a western and an eastern circular route, which can also be walked separately. Together, the two trails are seven kilometres long, and each has a fire pit. The route ends at the Crap Signina viewing platform. The platform is about a 30-minute walk from Sagogn; from there, you can see Sagogn, Val Mulin, the Ruinaulta and the area towards Ilanz. Check locally before your visit to see whether the viewing platform is accessible. Various orchid species bloom repeatedly along the Senda d’orchideas from mid-May to early August. Different species come into bloom roughly every two weeks, with the timing affected by the weather and season.

When snow conditions are good, Sagogn has about 15.5 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails for both classic and skating styles. Winter hiking trails run alongside the ski trails across sunny Plaun da Sagogn and over the plateau to Schluein. Another sporting option is Buna Vista Golf Sagogn, with 18 holes (par 72) at championship-course standard.
