Samnaun offers a variety of experiences, from 250 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails and snowshoe trails to seasonal insights into cheese production. There are also themed trails, a valley museum and a sauna complex with panoramic views. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you want to focus on outdoor activities, local history or regional products.

Samnaun and its hamlets

Samnaun is a municipality in the Swiss canton of GraubĂĽnden and is part of the Engiadina Bassa/Val MĂĽstair region. The municipality comprises five hamlets: Compatsch, Laret, Plan, Ravaisch and Samnaun. This makes it easier to place the local names you may encounter when looking up individual activities: one snowshoe trail, for example, leads from Ravaisch in the direction of Laret.

Hiking and outdoor activities

Samnaun has 250 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails. As trail availability can change with seasonal conditions, it is worth checking your planned route before setting off. In winter, there are two well-marked and secured snowshoe trails in the Samnaun Valley that are also suitable for beginners. However, access depends on snow conditions and wildlife protection requirements.

The second snowshoe trail leads from Samnaun-Ravaisch along the Schergenbach stream in the direction of Samnaun-Laret. Also check winter trail conditions before setting off. This ensures that your specific tour plans take account of local conditions rather than relying solely on the route description.

Discgolf also offers several course configurations. At the Vitaparcours in Samnaun Dorf, there is a family course and a pro layout, each with 18 holes. There is another course with 9 holes on Alptrider Sattel. The discgolf courses also allow you to play 27 varied holes in a single round. As the course configuration should be checked before your trip, we recommend looking at the latest information before planning your round.

Themed trails and valley history

The fairy-tale trail tells the story of Murmina and Murmin at ten stops. If you are looking for a trail with a continuous narrative, you will find a different focus here than on the thematic information boards along the Pater Maurus Carnot Trail, which features 17 boards about the life of this prominent Samnaun native. The trail can be used for hiking and walking in both summer and winter, although conditions vary by season.

The Samnaun Valley Museum recounts the difficult living conditions of a bygone era in the valley and is housed in an old farmhouse typical of the region. Visits are by guided tour, which lasts around 60 minutes. Tour arrangements may vary by season, so check the current options in advance. This museum visit offers a chance to explore both a historical subject and the region’s traditional architecture.

The area’s customs status is also part of its history: Samnaun is a Swiss customs-exclusion area whose status is linked to historical trade relations with Tyrol. A direct road connection to Samnaun across Swiss territory opened in 1912. Before that, the absence of such a road was a historical argument for its duty-free status. These two aspects shed light on local history from different perspectives: trade and the connection across Swiss territory.

Cheese and relaxation

The Samnaun dairy was originally founded in 1960 by 30 farmers as a cooperative. A guided tour gives visitors an insight into cheese production; tours are available seasonally. Samnaun cheese is a semi-hard cheese and matures for between three months and a year. The maturing period gives the product a tangible connection to local cheesemaking, while the tour focuses on the production process.

For a different kind of experience, the Alpenquell Erlebnisbad Samnaun features a sauna complex with panoramic views. Access and opening arrangements may vary. If you are planning a sauna visit, check the current options in advance.
