Narrow lanes, traditional farmhouses and a themed trail that starts at a bus stop next to a birthplace: Laret combines its own village centre with a variety of routes into the surrounding countryside. When planning, it helps to consider the cultural trail, hiking routes and seasonal winter activities separately. This lets you choose a focus without combining all the activities into a single outing.
Village Centre and Pater Maurus Carnot Trail
In the centre of Samnaun-Laret, there are traditional farmhouses and narrow lanes. The valley hiking trail on the south-facing slope also passes through the old village centre. It connects the village with a longer route that runs through the Pra da Tea larch forest and across the pastures of Muttauna to Salatsch.
The Pater Maurus Carnot themed trail starts at the “Samnaun-Laret, Dorf” stop, next to the birthplace of Pater Maurus Carnot. A total of 17 information panels tell the story of the life of this notable resident of Samnaun. The starting point thus combines the convenience of the bus stop with a tangible insight into the history of the village. The stop is served hourly by PostBus from Scuol-Tarasp or Martina, Cunfin; check the timetable for your journey.
Hikes with Different Destinations
On the Samnaun-Laret–Mot Grond route, the climb passes through lush meadows and dense forests rich in flora and fauna. The route offers views of Spiss in Austria. If you want to reach the barbecue area on Mot Grond, it is about a two-kilometre walk from the “Samnaun-Laret, Abzweigung der Talstrasse” stop.
The Samnaun-Laret–Fuorcla Curschiglias hike starts in Samnaun-Laret at an altitude of 1,700 metres, with a steady climb leading to a viewpoint with panoramic views over the Samnaun Valley. For an alternative route along the south-facing slope, the valley hiking trail passes through Pra da Tea and across the pastures of Muttauna to Salatsch. In summer, Samnaun-Laret is also the starting point for popular hikes to Alp Bella at 2,380 metres.
A shorter hiking option with clearly stated figures is the Quellentrail Tal: it is rated easy, is about 3.6 kilometres long and takes around 55 minutes. The route follows the Schergenbach, passes the sports ground and goes through Samnaun-Ravaisch and Plan to the Laret-Abzweigung bus stop. Check seasonal trail conditions before setting out. To get to the Quellentrail, take the Rhaetian Railway to Scuol-Tarasp, then PostBus to Samnaun Dorf, and continue by Samnaun bus during the day. Check the timetables for this connection in advance as well.
Winter Trails and Other Tours
The Samnaun-Plan cross-country skiing loop (L2) is about 1.7 kilometres long and has no significant climbs. The trail starts at the bridge over the Schergenbach on Talstrasse in Samnaun-Laret and runs along both sides of the stream. Operation depends on snow conditions, so check them before setting out. Free parking for the route is available in Samnaun-Laret or at the Alpinetta petrol station; it is worth checking the latest parking information before travelling.
A snowshoe hike through the deep-snow landscape of Samnaun-Laret is another recommended winter activity. For a different kind of tour, the 7189 Duty Free Laret Trail includes a downhill singletrack with just under 600 metres of elevation loss; there is a small lake near the start. The information about these activities describes different options, not a single combined route.
Samnaun Dairy: Production and Tasting
At the show dairy, or Samnaun dairy, in Laret, you can watch local dairy products being made from Samnaun mountain milk. A guided tour offers insight into the production process, followed by a tasting. Samnaun Tourism organises a weekly tour of the dairy, where visitors can sample the products. Guided tours and cheese tastings can also be arranged by prior registration. A cheese platter featuring specialities from the dairy’s own production completes the offer for visitors.
