Ardez lies on a terrace above the Inn Valley at an altitude of around 1,460 m. Romansh residential architecture, the ruins of Steinsberg Castle and trails through the Lower Engadine landscape give the village its distinctive character. When planning your visit, you can choose between exploring the village’s architectural history and enjoying scenic hikes.

Village Culture and Historic Buildings

Ardez is considered a model village of Romansh residential architecture. Many imposing farmhouses have protected façades, typically painted and decorated with sgraffito. The Planta House is a patrician residence dating from 1642 and has been the home of the Fundaziun Not Vital since 2006. These buildings represent different chapters in the village’s history, which cannot be reduced to a single period.

The Reformed church also brings together different historical periods: the present-day church was built in 1576/77 on the foundations of an older place of worship. It is regarded as Switzerland’s first Reformed gallery church and also as one of its rare Renaissance buildings. A gallery church is a church with raised galleries in its interior; the term thus describes a distinctive form of church architecture.

Steinsberg and the History of the Castle

The ruins of Steinsberg Castle, with the remains of the Chapel of St. Lucius, are Ardez’s landmark. They stand on a rocky hill at the edge of the village and serve as a viewpoint. The castle is documented as far back as 1209. The connections between castle, settlement and cultural landscape are particularly clear in Ardez: the castle remains and village can be viewed as interconnected parts of the village’s history.

Another historic building is Tuor Vonzun, also known as La Praschun. The medieval residential tower stands on the southwestern edge of Ardez. Four of the original five storeys of this mid-13th-century building have been preserved. Tuor Vonzun is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. This restriction is important to keep in mind when planning: you can look at the tower from outside, but it is not possible to visit the interior.

Hikes, Trails and Views

The Smaragdgebiet Ardez Discovery Trail is an adventure trail for the whole family. At the trail’s high point, there are views of the ruins of Steinsberg Castle and the Engadine mountains; how far you can see depends on conditions. Check seasonal conditions before setting out. The circular hike starting and ending in Ardez offers a different perspective: it leads from the train station through the village centre and reaches a high point of 2,482 m. From the route, you can see the three-thousand-metre peaks on the opposite side of the valley and the side valleys of the Lower Engadine. On higher sections, you can also see some of Macun’s approximately 20 mountain lakes in the National Park. The two options differ chiefly in the character described: a family adventure trail with views of Steinsberg, or a circular hike with viewpoints at higher elevations.

For a longer route through the region, take the high-altitude hike from Lavin to Ardez via Guarda along the Via Engiadina; conditions in the mountains can vary. The Inn Cycle Route, Guarda–Pfunds stage, also leads to Ardez after passing through the hamlet of Bos-cha, descending to the foot of the ruins of Steinsberg Castle. The stage then continues along the old main road, with views of the Lower Engadine Dolomites and Tarasp Castle. These routes offer different perspectives on the landscape, but they do not follow the same route.

Another trail leads from Ardez train station along a road down to the Inn and up to Sur En d’Ardez. There, you can explore the surroundings on foot in a peaceful atmosphere. Sur En d’Ardez was also the filming location for all the scenes set in Uorsin’s home village, featuring Uorsin, his family and his friends, in the film “Schellen-Ursli”.

Getting There and Seasonal Activities

Ardez train station is served hourly by the Rhaetian Railway from Chur, Landquart/Prättigau, Scuol or the Upper Engadine. Check the timetable before travelling. Ardez is located directly on the Engadinerstrasse H27; it is about a 15-minute drive from the south portal of the Vereina Tunnel, depending on traffic and seasonal conditions.

There is also a seasonal winter activity: the natural ice rink is right next to the school and is open for ice skating and ice hockey free of charge during the winter season, when temperatures are suitable. Be sure to take the temperature requirement into account when planning this activity.
