The Landwasser Viaduct is 65 metres high and 136 metres long; the stone-arched bridge has six arches. From the Acatos viewing platform in the forest, you can see the viaduct, the steep slope and the Landwasser River. The walk there takes about 25 minutes from Filisur station. Another path leads from the cantonal road to the viaduct’s pillars and a viewing platform.
Experience the Railway and Viaduct
At Filisur station, the converted old railway carriage “Filusio” explores optical illusions relating to various railway themes. The showroom at the station tells the story of the Rhaetian Railway’s UNESCO World Heritage route and the Landwasser Viaduct. The Landwasser Express travels directly from Filisur to a viewpoint at the viaduct. During the ride, you will learn about the viaduct, the Albula Line and the Rhaetian Railway’s World Heritage status. At the destination, there is an information kiosk, seating and a barbecue area. Check the latest operating information before travelling; details may vary and facilities at the destination may change.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes
The Four Viaducts hike starts at Filisur station and leads across meadows and through forests to Wiesen station before returning to the starting point. The route also passes a viaduct that is 89 metres high. A different route is offered by the second stage of the Natura Trail Parc Ela 2: it runs from Filisur via Crap Furò and Surava to Tiefencastel, offers a close-up view of the Landwasser Viaduct and descends into the valley along the shady banks of the Albula. While the Four Viaducts hike returns to Filisur, the stage described ends in Tiefencastel. Check trail conditions before setting out on the Four Viaducts hike.
The Filisur–Visura winter hike offers a perspective of its own: from the route, you can see the Albula Valley and the village of Filisur. As this is a winter hike, it is advisable to check conditions before setting out.
Village History and Architecture
Filisur is listed in the national inventory of cultural property and is considered one of the best-preserved Engadine street villages. The village’s houses are characterised by the Engadine architectural style. One specific example is at Dorfstrasse 84: the house was probably built in the first half of the 16th century and features elaborate façade paintings. The late Gothic Reformed church was built in the 15th and 17th centuries on the site of a medieval complex.
The surrounding area also tells of earlier uses. Near Filisur, Bellaluna preserves the miners’ house and the director’s house of the former smelting works. Greifenstein Castle ruins were the centre of the Lordship of Greifenstein, which included Filisur, Bergün, Latsch and Stugl/Stuls.
Getting There and More to Explore
Filisur is accessible by Rhaetian Railway on the UNESCO World Heritage route towards the Engadine. The FiliTour can start at Filisur station or at the western entrance to the village; a path leads from the station into the village. The Viaduct Shuttle runs regularly between Filisur and Alvaneu. As operating times may vary, check the latest information before travelling.
The wider BergĂĽn Filisur area offers opportunities for trail running and outdoor activities in a natural landscape of meadows, forests, streams, mountain lakes and peaks. Regional winter sports include sledging, skiing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, curling, winter hiking, snowshoeing and ski touring.
