On the southern shore of Lake Walen, below the Kerenzerberg, the Meerenbach forms the small delta known as the Horn. Mühlehorn combines this distinctive lakeside setting with the history of former mills, a listed church and the hammer mill. The lido, blacksmithing experience and scheduled boat services add practical activities and another travel option to the historical perspective. When choosing where to stay, the lake, local history and transport each play a different role.

Lake Walen, the Horn and the municipality

Across the entire municipal area, 34 percent is used for agriculture and 52 percent is forest. Mühlehorn lies directly on Lake Walen. The Meerenbach also links the local geography to the village’s history, as important mills once operated along it. The proportion of forest exceeds that of agricultural land by 18 percentage points; together, the two account for 86 percent of the total area of the municipality of Mühlehorn.

Getting there by road or boat

Mühlehorn has its own motorway exit and is also a stop for the scheduled boats on Lake Walen. This provides two different ways to get there: by road or by boat. If you plan to travel by scheduled boat, check the current timetable in advance, as timetables may change. You can then plan your boat journey around the departure times for your visit.

Mills, the forge and the church

The Mühlehorn hammer mill was built in 1777. During the blacksmithing experience, a waterwheel powers the hammers and the forge fire. This demonstrates the use of water in a different way from the former mills on the Meerenbach: here, the focus is on blacksmithing and powering the hammers. During the team blacksmithing activity, participants also create a sculpture themselves. If you plan to take part in this activity, check the booking details beforehand, as event arrangements may change.

Mühlehorn Church offers another way to explore the village’s history. After renovation work was completed in 1974, it was listed as a historic monument. Apparently, Messmer independently designed and built it in the style of the Grubenmann family. The church’s consecration was celebrated on 10 June 1761. These dates mark different milestones: the consecration, the completion of the renovation and the subsequent heritage listing.

Swimming and open-air cinema

Mühlehorn Lido offers free swimming in Lake Walen. Facilities include a sunbathing lawn, a changing room, toilets and a wood-fired grill. As facilities may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. In summer, the lido also hosts an open-air cinema; check the specific screening dates for your stay. This gives you two distinct options to consider: swimming and a seasonal cultural event.
