Obstalden lies at just under 700 metres on a terrace on Kerenzerberg, high above Lake Walen. Landscape, church art and the history of the trails come together here. You can choose different focuses for your stay: the ridges, the church’s frescoes or the Historic Heerenweg with the Filzbach Gorge.
High-altitude landscapes on Kerenzerberg
Kerenzerberg is part of the Sardona Geopark. In Obstalden, Ruchen MĂĽrtschen rises to 2,441 metres; it is the highest summit in Glarus Nord. The municipality is also home to MĂĽrtschenstock, which is just under 2,500 metres high, with steep rock faces and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The names refer to different summits: an exact height is given for Ruchen MĂĽrtschen, while MĂĽrtschenstock is just under 2,500 metres high. The road across the high plateau of Kerenzerberg also has its own elevation: it lies at over 700 metres and is a historic mountain pass. The terrace, pass road and summits thus represent different elevations within the landscape.
Church and medieval paintings
Obstalden Church was built around 1300 and, with its 14th- and 15th-century frescoes, has largely been preserved in its original condition. The wall paintings in the tower choir are the oldest surviving example of monumental painting in the Canton of Glarus. During the 1979 restoration, 15th-century paintings were uncovered on the south wall of the choir. The construction date and the first documented mention are two distinct historical reference points: the church building is dated to the beginning of the 14th century; Obstalden was first mentioned in a document in 1340 in connection with Säckingen Abbey. The paintings, in turn, date from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Mining history and route
Iron, and above all copper and silver, were mined on MĂĽrtschenalp in the 17th century. Parts of the former mining facilities can still be found today. The named raw materials thus reflect the former use of the alp, while some structural traces have survived to this day.
The Historic Heerenweg with the Filzbach Gorge leads from the Roman bridge via the hamlet of Walenguflen to Obstalden. It follows historic Roman roads that once led from Zurich towards GraubĂĽnden and bypassed Lake Walen. From Obstalden, the route follows Lake Walen back to MĂĽhlehorn railway station. The trail thus connects several specific stops with a historical interpretation relating to the former link between Zurich and GraubĂĽnden.
