Düdingen is a municipality in the Sense District of the Canton of Fribourg in Switzerland, located east of Lake Schiffenen in the German-speaking part of the Fribourg Plateau. Three transport routes help you get your bearings: the Fribourg–Bern railway line, the A12 motorway and the Fribourg–Bern cantonal road cross Düdingen from southwest to northeast. When planning your time here, you can focus on culture, nature, activity or a boat trip.

Rock history and hermitage

The Magdalena Hermitage in Räsch near Düdingen is carved into the rock faces above the Schiffenen Reservoir. The complex consists of several rooms and has a total length of 120 metres. Its history dates back to 1448; its present structure took shape between 1680 and 1708. For a cultural stay, it offers a historical focus that differs from the botanical and village themes of the trails.

Walks with different themes

The Botanical Trail is a circular route about five kilometres long. Along it, you can discover 60 native bog, meadow and forest plants.

The Senses and Sound Trail combines a walking path along the shore of Lake Schiffenen with a cultural experience. It features 15 sensory and sound objects that visitors can try out and play. As a themed trail, it also draws attention to the bog’s biodiversity. Unlike the Botanical Trail, the focus here is on trying out the sound and sensory objects.

The well-signposted Düdingen Village Walk covers about 4.5 kilometres and passes through the old and new village centres as well as local recreation areas. Several information boards along the route provide details about buildings and places of interest. At about 4.5 kilometres, the walk is similar in length to the approximately five-kilometre Botanical Trail, but the focus differs: village centres and information boards here, plants there.

Boat trips and activity

The “d’Grandfey” excursion boat offers a pleasure cruise from Schiffenen (Düdingen) to Fribourg (Neigles) and back. It is powered by electric solar energy. If you plan to take the trip, check the timetable in advance.

The Vitaparcours fitness trail in the municipality of Düdingen, in Brugeraholz, is 2.7 kilometres long. It starts at the entrance to Brugeraholz forest on Alfons-Aeby-Strasse. Brugeraholz also has a 400-metre Finnish track.

Seasonal picking and culture

At the Self-Pick Schiffenen farm, you can pick your own vegetables, fruit and flowers from March to November. As availability is seasonal, check before your visit whether it is available for your chosen date. The Self-Pick Schiffenen farm shop also sells vegetables, fruit, bread and eggs on a self-service basis.

“Culture in the Church” aims to provide a programme for the whole community in Düdingen’s new Reformed church. The seating can be arranged to suit each event.
