For a stay in Bösingen, you can choose between two distinct focuses: the village’s history and cycling tours on signposted routes. Bösingen is in the canton of Fribourg and belongs to the Sense District. The village centre is classified by the Swiss Heritage Office as a site of national importance. Sacred buildings, archaeological traces, and circular routes of varying lengths and difficulty offer different starting points for planning.

Local History and Sacred Buildings

Graves dating from the Hallstatt period point to early traces of settlement in the municipality. Remains of a Roman estate, probably inhabited from the 1st to the 4th century AD, lie near today’s village church. The two archaeological findings belong to different periods; the later parish church has its own, considerably more recent building history. The local history thus extends beyond the sacred buildings to include early traces of settlement.

Bösingen’s parish church is dedicated to Saint James the Greater and was built as a Late Baroque church between 1788 and 1791. The open bell tower houses the largest bell in the Sense District. Most of the ceiling paintings are by the artist Gottfried Locher. The dedication, construction period, bell, and ceiling paintings shed light on different aspects of the same building and offer insight into its religious and artistic history.

A much older chapter concerns the former Church of Saint Syrus. Around 935, it was founded by Queen Bertha and King Rudolf II of Burgundy. It later became an important pilgrimage site; in 1890, it was demolished. Its chronology differs markedly from that of the Late Baroque parish church: the history of the Church of Saint Syrus dates back to the 10th century and also includes its later significance as a pilgrimage site.

The cemetery chapel dates from 1836 and is dedicated to the Holy Cross. A clay figure of Saint Syrus is kept inside. Its construction date, dedication, and figure are three concrete points of connection to local history. The forest chapel is also one of Bösingen’s sacred heritage sites. It is among the many chapels that dramatically shape the landscape of the Düdingen-Bösingen/Laupen pastoral unit.

Cycling Routes and Other Activities

Laupen/Bösingen is one of the main starting points for the signposted cycling routes. A signposted cycling network offers circular routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels; the individual routes can be combined as you wish. When choosing, you can use your preferred distance and difficulty level as separate points of reference.

The outdoor area of BEO Funpark has more than 1,600 m² of play space. From Laupen railway station, a footpath leads towards Laupen via Alte Bernstrasse and Gillenauweg; the park is about 600 m away. Allow for the approximate distance and check the directions again before your trip. This footpath can therefore be considered as a separate planning option alongside local history and cycling tours.
