Rossens is the starting point for two hikes with different highlights: the Chemins de la Sarine connect the village with Düdingen; on the Rossens–La Roche–Corbières stage of the Sentier du Lac de La Gruyère, you cross the dam. Forests, fields, riverbanks and the lake offer different impressions and help you choose the right activity for your stay.

Hiking trails with their own character

The Chemins de la Sarine start at the bus stop in the village of Rossens. Their main route connects Rossens with Düdingen. Along the way, shaded forest paths alternate with open trails through fields and meadows; in some sections, the paths run along the banks of the Sarine. Forest passages, agricultural landscapes and riverbanks sit side by side. If you mainly want to experience a variety of landscapes on a hike, this contrast gives you a practical starting point for planning.

The Rossens–La Roche–Corbières stage of the Sentier du Lac de La Gruyère has different highlights. It offers glimpses of typical farms and buildings in the La Gruyère region and crosses the 320 m-long Rossens dam, between the lake and the precipice. The Sentier offers views of the lake and the Pre-Alps. Regional architectural heritage, the crossing of the dam, and views of the lake and Pre-Alps come together here. Compared with the wooded sections and riverside paths of the Chemins, this stage focuses more on the lake.

Plan the dam as a hiking stage or a visit

On the Sentier du Lac de La Gruyère, crossing the dam is part of the hiking stage. Visiting the dam is a separate planning option: allow 1 hour and 30 minutes. Individual visits are possible on available dates; guided tours for groups of 10 or more are available by arrangement. If you are planning an individual visit, check the published dates. Groups should arrange their visit in advance. This helps you distinguish between the hike and a visit appointment according to your plans.

Fortress history and a puzzle game in the Illens area

A distinct cultural highlight is Château d’Illens in the municipality of Gibloux. The medieval fortress was built in the 12th century. Its grounds are open to the public year-round, and the esplanade is freely accessible on foot. As certain visiting conditions may change, check the current conditions before your visit. This gives you a practical guide to visiting without tying the historical context to a fixed visiting time.

La Gardienne des Légendes is a self-guided game in the Illens area: using a game kit and a mobile app, you solve challenges involving observation, logic and local cultural heritage. This immersive puzzle game is suitable for families and other curious visitors. The focus is on discovering things for yourself and solving the challenges; no guided format is required. If you prefer to explore culture through play, this activity is quite different from a visit to the fortress.

An artistic connection to Rossens

Rossens is also connected to an artist: sculptor Yves Tinguely is from the village and created Bouné Rodzo, an eight-metre-tall wooden giant. The named artist and precise height make the work a specific cultural point of interest alongside the hiking trails and fortress history. For your choice, this means Rossens can be associated with nature and architectural heritage, while the artist offers another perspective on the village.
