Châtel-sur-Montsalvens combines a historic, terraced village layout with distinctive buildings and paths around Lac de Montsalvens. The original village consists of three hamlets: Châtel-Dessous, Châtel-Dessus and Les Planets. Above them lie the Gorges de la Jogne, the lake and the dam. This offers two clear focal points when choosing a destination: architectural and local history, and hiking through a landscape of lake, forest and hills. However, which trails are currently suitable also depends on whether the gorge is closed.
Hamlets and architectural heritage
Châtel-Dessous includes a chapel, a former chaplaincy and a row of houses. Right beside the chapel stands a remarkable residential building dating from 1795; its façade is decorated with arcades and diamond patterns. The chapel was consecrated in 1701 and has a barrel vault made of long wooden slats. The main altar has two tabernacles arranged one above the other and depictions of Saints Nicolas and Magne; the nave contains a painting of Our Lady of the Rosary. Châtel-sur-Montsalvens was first mentioned in 1388 under the name Chastel propre Montservens.
The Sentier des patrimoines de la Jogne passes through Châtel-sur-Montsalvens and showcases the valley's architectural heritage and living traditions. Almost 60 descriptive panels are located near buildings or places associated with these traditions. Nearby, above Broc, lie the ruins of Montsalvens. The remains include the tower, the keep, sections of the ramparts, the upper gate, and the foundations of houses and the lower gate of a medieval settlement.
Dam, lake and views
From Châtel-sur-Montsalvens, there are views of Vounetz, the Dent-de-Broc, the Moléson and the Château de Gruyères. The Montsalvens Dam near Châtel-sur-Montsalvens is Europe's first arch dam with both horizontal and vertical curvature. It is 52 metres high and 110 metres long. A 60-metre suspension bridge crosses an arm of Lac de Montsalvens.
The hike around the lake also offers a variety of landscapes: it runs along the shore, through the forest and over hills, with views of the Dents Vertes. The longer circuit of Lac de Montsalvens is described as a three-hour hike. The Châtel-sur-Montsalvens, Rest. stop is listed as a public transport access point for this hike. Check the timetable before your trip.
Hiking and current trail conditions
The Vias-du-Fromage route follows Lac de Montsalvens to the dam and then passes through the Jaunbach Gorge in the direction of Broc. However, a current restriction applies to the Gorges de la Jogne: following extensive winter damage, they are closed for an indefinite period; repair work is planned. Check the status before your trip.
The 3-kilometre forest path between Broc and Châtel-sur-Montsalvens, described as part of the gorge hike, belongs in this context and should not be planned as a currently open connection given the closure. The 3 kilometres refer to this forest path; the three-hour duration, by contrast, refers to the circuit around the lake. These are separate route details. A connection from Crésuz to Gruyères via Châtel-sur-Montsalvens remains possible despite the closure. Check trail conditions for this route too before your trip.
