Vuissens combines a distinctive linear village with woodland, a circular trail and golf. When choosing where to stay, you can focus on different aspects: the village and its history, the landscape or a sporting activity. These local features can be considered separately, without combining them into a fixed itinerary.
Village Structure and Setting
Vuissens is a linear village on a high plateau between the Mentue valley to the west and the Broye valley to the east, in the western Fribourg Central Plateau. Its linear structure is evident in an exceptionally long row of farmhouses oriented towards the church. Vuissens is listed in the Swiss Federal Inventory of Heritage Sites of National Importance. The long row of houses is therefore a distinctive feature of the village and a point of interest in its own right for anyone who pays attention to a village’s character when travelling.
Landscape and Circular Trail
The plateau lies in the headwaters of the Petite Glâne. The landscape includes woodland at the source of the Flonzel, as well as the wooded heights of Grand Bois and Bois de la Regne. The Les Marais-de-Courtes-Poses forest reserve is also within the territory of Vuissens. The land-use figures offer further insight into its rural setting: 51.1 percent is agricultural land and 36.4 percent is wooded.
The Vuissens–Prévondavaux–Denezy–Vuissens Circular Trail No. 74 starts in Vuissens along a grassy path and then follows an officially marked concrete path to Prévondavaux. There is a small public car park at Château de Vuissens, at an altitude of about 740 metres, which serves as a starting point for the circular trail. This gives you the starting point and the surfaces along the described section to help with planning.
Heritage and Dining
The Grange du château is listed in the inventory of cultural property for Vuissens as a Category B cultural asset. The restored Grange houses the A Votre Goût restaurant, which welcomes members and visitors. If you plan to dine there, check before travelling whether the restaurant is open and what its opening hours are.
A description updated in 2020 suggests that the Fontana family founded Château de Vuissens around 1200; the tower at the western corner is considered its oldest surviving part. According to the same description, the castle courtyard is accessible at all times, while the interiors are reserved for restaurant patrons and overnight guests. Check this access policy locally before planning your visit.
Golf in Vuissens
Golf Club Vuissens is open to visitors on weekdays and weekends. Its course has 18 holes and measures 6,150 metres; gentle contours and surroundings characterized by forests and lakes are among its features. The club has two putting greens, an approach practice area, a covered driving range, practice mats and a grass practice area. An independent golf academy offers lessons for juniors and beginners. Check opening and operating hours before travelling.
