The Aare shapes Uttigen’s landscape and many of the discoveries to be made here: riverside paths along the tops of the embankments, hiking and cycling, as well as the Aare boating route with the Uttigen weir. Historical traces—from the remains of the former castle to the old schoolhouse—offer a different focus.
Aare landscapes and paths by the water
The approximately 2 km-long “Oberi Au Uttigen” section stretches from the Uetendorf wastewater treatment plant bridge to the municipal boundary with Kiesen, above the SBB bridge. Along the Aare are woodland areas and diverse habitats with a wide variety of plant and animal species. The paths along the tops of the embankments are often used for walks; the Aare landscape also invites you to hike and cycle.
On the Aare boating route, the Uttigen weir offers a different kind of thrill: it is considered an adrenaline highlight because a large rock in the middle of the river creates strong eddies. Near Uttigenfluh, sandy and gravelly banks form a particularly beautiful natural stretch of the route. The banks are suitable for a stop; access to the river may vary depending on conditions.
Getting around by bike or train
The Lötschberg–Jura cycling route crosses the Aare at Uttigen. In the village, it briefly follows the main road along the right bank of the Aare before continuing through the countryside. Check current route conditions before setting off. The cycling paths from Uttigen to Uetendorf and Heimberg are separate: they name two destinations, while the Lötschberg–Jura route describes its course and the Aare crossing.
There is also a specific option for travelling by train: the S1 suburban train between Bern and Thun runs in both directions through Uttigen every half hour. Check the current timetable before travelling. This lets you plan your train journey separately from a possible cycling tour, without having to combine the two into a fixed itinerary.
Historical traces in Uttigen
The former schoolhouse stands on Bühl Hill and has a roof turret with a clock. It was built on the remains of the medieval church. Only small remnants of the former castle can still be seen today. The buildings point to different historical traces in the village; Uttigen’s location on the Aare was also important for timber rafting from an early date.
Community life and the November concert
An entertainment concert with theatre takes place in Uttigen every year in November. If you would like to include this in your stay, check the specific event date in advance.
The Uttigen Archers offer club members and interested beginners opportunities to take part in archery. The club provides archery equipment in good condition for courses and events. If you would like to participate, check current options directly with the archery club.
Plan a stay to suit you
When looking for hotels in Uttigen, it helps to consider whether the Aare landscape, a cycling tour or local history will shape your stay. Riverside paths and the cycling route offer different ways to explore the river landscape; the castle remains and former schoolhouse add a historical touch. For practical planning, it is worth checking the timetable, route conditions and event dates in advance.
