A small lake in a glacial moraine landscape, a hike along Lake Gerzensee and historic traces reveal different sides of Gerzensee. The nature reserve includes siltation zones, a peninsula and meadows that shape the lake’s landscape. At the same time, the village is situated on the southern slope of Belpberg, above the Aare and Gürbe valleys, with views of the Pre-Alps and High Alps. When planning your visit, you can focus on nature, outdoor activities or local history.
Lake and Landscape
The Gerzensee Nature Reserve encompasses a small lake in a typical glacial moraine landscape, with natural siltation zones and a peninsula. Wet meadows and extensively managed natural meadows surround the lake. Siltation zones are natural transition areas between lake and land; the peninsula and the two types of meadows give the landscape further, clearly distinct features.
Gerzensee is situated on the southern slope of Belpberg, above the Aare and GĂĽrbe valleys, with views of the mountain ranges of the Pre-Alps and High Alps. While the small lake provides a local landscape feature, views from Gerzensee extend to the Pre-Alps and High Alps.
Hiking and Cycling
The hike along Lake Gerzensee leads through the GĂĽrbe Plain, along the flank of Belpberg and over its scenic southern foothills. The route is shaped by the transition between plain and hillside. Trail conditions vary by season, so bear this in mind when planning. To get there, take the train from Thun or Bern to Kaufdorf; the return journey is by bus from Kirchdorf. Check the current timetable before travelling to make sure the outward and return journeys suit your plans.
The Belpberg Route (SwitzerlandMobility 361) is a 30.85 km cycling route. Along Lake Gerzensee, it leads to the village of Gerzensee, which shares the lake’s name; in Gerzensee, the route climbs steeply to Belpberg. The tour offers views of the Aare, Gürbe and Stocken valleys, although visibility depends on the weather. Route specifications may change, so check the details before setting off. The activities differ in several ways: for the hike, the route and train and bus connections are part of the planning, while the cycling tour is defined by its overall distance, climb and views of the valleys.

Village Character and History
In the village centre, the Rosengarten country estate is immediately next to the parish church. The core of the existing building was constructed in 1701. Gerzensee is also listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites (ISOS). The village’s character and the building history of Rosengarten are separate aspects: the federal inventory concerns Gerzensee, while the construction date refers to the core of the estate.
Several locations of pile-dwelling settlements are clearly visible at Lake Gerzensee. Alongside the village’s character and the estate, archaeological traces by the lake are another aspect of Gerzensee’s cultural history.
The history of Gerzensee Castle dates back to 1700. Its restaurant serves cuisine featuring seasonal ingredients from its own hotel garden. While the 1701 building core of the Rosengarten country estate provides its historical context, Gerzensee Castle combines a history dating back to 1700 with a culinary aspect.
