Sangernboden lies on the north bank of the Kalte Sense in the Gantrisch region. There are several different things to focus on when planning your visit: the church above the village, a marked snowshoe tour in the Muscherenschlund, other winter trails and alpine cheese from the nearby area. The tours have their own distances and time frames; there is also a seasonal place to stop for a meal and a bus route that runs year-round.

A village by the river in the Gantrisch region

Sangernboden is a village in the Bernese Pre-Alps and politically belongs to the municipality of Guggisberg. It lies on the north bank of the Kalte Sense, one of the Sense’s headwater streams. The Sangernboden–Kalte Sense area is listed in the second addition to the Federal Inventory of Floodplains of National Importance. The access road to the Gurnigel Pass also runs through the Sangernboden area. Schwefelberg-Bad lies above Sangernboden, below the pass summit of the Gurnigel Pass, and belongs to the neighbouring municipality of Rüschegg.

Church and stained-glass window

Sangernboden has its own Reformed church, which has stood above the village since 1931. Particularly noteworthy is a stained-glass window depicting the Passion of Jesus, created by Swiss painter and writer Leo Steck. The church is open at all times. As local access arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit. This cultural landmark adds a specific work of art and its religious subject to the area’s trails and nature attractions.

Snowshoe tour and winter hiking

The marked Gantrischli snowshoe tour starts in the Muscherenschlund, an unspoilt side valley accessible from Sangernboden by road. The starting point can also be reached on foot from the bus stop in Sangernboden; this adds around 50 minutes to the walking time. The circular route itself is 6.8 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 55 minutes.

The Schwarzenbühl–Otteleue winter hiking trail has a different time estimate: it is rated easy, is 4.3 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. The trail can be continued as far as Sangernboden. Its stated duration is therefore shorter than that of the Gantrischli circular route; for the latter, you may also need to add the walk from the bus stop to the starting point. Both winter routes may be affected by seasonal conditions. Check the relevant route information before setting off.

Another route and getting there

The Schwefelbergbad Trail starts in Sangernboden or at Schwefelbergbad. It is 3.85 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes. This time frame falls between the estimates for the Schwarzenbühl–Otteleue winter hiking trail and the Gantrischli snowshoe tour. These are separate routes, not consecutive stages.

The year-round Gurnigel Route 323 runs at least twice daily via Riggisberg, Gurnigel, Sangernboden, Zollhaus, Plaffeien and Schwarzenburg. As timetables may change, check the current connection before travelling. The bus stop in Sangernboden is also the starting point for the footpath to the Gantrischli snowshoe tour described above.

Alpine cheese and places to eat

In the nearby area, the Alpchäsi Gantrischli turns the milk from five Muscheren Valley alpine pastures into cheese from late May to mid-September. It sells its alpine cheese at the Alpbeizli and from a self-service kiosk. The Gasthof Hirschen Sangernboden offers a seasonal, traditional restaurant with a tasting menu and an extensive wine selection. Production periods, sales arrangements and restaurant offerings may change; check the latest information before planning around them.
