In Guggisberg, the range of things to discover stretches from Swiss folk-song history and late Gothic church art to a village walk and steep hiking trails. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping the different options in mind: the museum can only be visited by prior arrangement, while the village walk is freely accessible. Outdoors, short local routes sit alongside more challenging hikes.
Vreneli history and the late Gothic church
The Vreneli Museum brings to life the story of one of Switzerland’s most famous folk songs. A guided introduction to the story of Vreneli is offered in the morning or afternoon. Visits are by prior arrangement only. Access to the different floors is also important to consider when planning: the ground floor is wheelchair accessible, but the first and second floors are not.
Guggisberg Church was built in its present form in the 15th century, with its massive tower in the late Gothic style. The choir houses one of the most significant and beautiful late Gothic baptismal fonts in the Bern region. The church has been under federal protection since 1974. Its architecture, furnishings and history of protection offer various points of interest, without requiring you to plan a long walk around the village.
Village walk and exhibitions
The freely accessible village walk is about 1 kilometre long and easy for everyone to access. At 17 information panels spread throughout the village, you can learn about Guggisberg’s traditional old houses. The route offers a compact introduction to the village’s architecture and history. If you would like to include art, Kunst in Guggisberg has an exhibition space in the attic of the municipal building. The exhibition programme may vary.
Hiking to Guggershörnli
Guggershörnli is a distinctive, wooded mountain above the village, with a Nagelfluh rock formation on its summit. It can be reached on foot from Guggisberg in about half an hour and offers sweeping panoramic views. The steep cliff is climbed from the west via a sturdy wooden staircase.
The Guggershörnli picnic and barbecue site is a separate attraction. It is located at 1,283 metres above sea level and can be reached via the hiking trail from Guggisberg, at 1,115 metres, or from Riffenmatt. The site is covered and has a grill grate and about 16 seats. From there, the view stretches across large parts of Gantrisch Nature Park, from the Alps to Lake Biel; the seating makes it a scenic place to stop along the way.
Another hiking option is the Vreneli Trail. It connects Guggisberg with Walenhaus via Guggershörnli, or with Riffenmatt via Schwendelberg. Five specially designed rest stops offer views and activities that challenge you to play with wit and skill. The trail follows official hiking paths, is fairly steep and requires suitable hiking gear, including sturdy footwear. To return to Guggisberg, you can follow the marked hiking trail or take the PostBus.
Cycling, transport links and regional products
For an e-bike tour, the Gantrisch 333 Legends Route passes through the Vreneli village of Guggisberg. It is around 50 kilometres long and includes five legends stops. The range of activities around Guggisberg also includes well-signposted mountain bike trails; individual routes and conditions may vary. PostBus route 612 connects Schwarzenburg with Guggisberg. If your plans depend on this connection, check the timetable before travelling.
Regional products are also part of the visitor experience. Käserei Guggisberg AG produces Gruyère AOP and other cheese specialities. Its self-service shop offers regional specialities such as Brätzeli, Meinques, Krachmandeln, syrup, honey and jam; the selection may change.
