The Schwefelbergbad Trail is a 3.85 km snowshoe tour that crosses pastures and passes through dense forests. Open pastures and wooded sections shape the scenery along this route. Depending on snow conditions and prior use, it can also be used as a winter hiking trail. Before setting out, check the latest route information and conditions, as details and seasonal suitability may change.

Hikes with Different Profiles

A longer option is the “Auf dem alten Schwefelbergweg” hike. Rated as moderate, the route is 10.8 km long and passes through quiet mountain forests and across alpine pastures to Süftenenegg. It descends via the Grönweiden to the Gantrischsense and continues to Schwefelbergbad. This describes both the waypoints and the direction of the descent.

By comparison, the Schwefelbergbad Trail is the shorter of the two routes described here: a 3.85 km snowshoe tour versus a 10.8 km moderate hike. The type of tour also differs. Winter hiking may be a conditional alternative on the trail; the old Schwefelbergweg is described as a hike with a specific route through several landscapes and waypoints. The length and activity type therefore offer different points of reference when choosing a tour.

Another mountain hiking trail leads from Schwefelbergbad via the Louigrat to the Ochsen. Check the trail conditions and access requirements in advance, as they may vary. This adds a route with the Ochsen as its destination to the routes leading to Schwefelbergbad.

The Ochsen, the Spring, and Local History

On the summit hike to the Ochsen, the trail passes the decommissioned sulphur spring. Check whether the spring site is currently accessible before visiting.

From the Ochsen, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Gantrisch range, from the Stockhorn to the Fribourg Alps, as well as the Swiss Plateau and the Oberland. Visibility across these areas depends on the weather. When choosing this hike, both the summit destination and the conditions for the view are therefore relevant.

A note about the building at Schwefelbergbad 47 in Sangernboden: in the 2022 building inventory of the municipality of Rüschegg, it is classified as “worthy of preservation.” The inventory entry is dated 2010.

Note About the Former Hotel

An article published on 11 February 2024 reported that, at the time, the former four-star Hotel Schwefelbergbad had been vacant for eleven years. Before visiting, check the current conditions and access restrictions at the site.
