Oberried Am Brienzersee lies on the northern shore of Lake Brienz, between the water and the steep slopes of the Brienzergrat. The municipality stretches along the shore and over wooded slopes up to the Tannhorn at 2,221 m. This gives trip planning two distinct landscape settings: walking paths along the lakeshore and routes on slopes and meadows.

Lakeshore, slopes and local character

Oberried has preserved its traditional character. In regional terms, the village is part of the Interlaken holiday region in the Bern Region. This region is in the Bernese Oberland, around Lakes Thun and Brienz. Oberried’s own location is more specifically defined by its proximity to the lake and the rise into the wooded heights; at 2,221 m, the Tannhorn marks an elevation reference point for the municipality.

There are walking paths along the lakeshore, mountain routes on the slopes and meadows, as well as cycling tours. Those travelling on foot can therefore choose between lakeside and high-altitude settings. For cycling, the Brienzersee Loop is a separate option; the different details about paths and routes can be considered according to the activity and the stated time or distance reference.

Hiking trails and the seasonal suspension bridge

The Höhenweg Brienz–Oberried is listed as taking 2 hours and 30 minutes. Another route option is Variant A of the Bernese Oberland Trail from Brienz to Interlaken: Oberried is reached after approximately 7.0 km. The trail runs over paved and unpaved paths; the section passing through Oberried is part of the Swiss Way of St. James routes. These details answer different planning questions: the Höhenweg focuses on duration, while Variant A specifies an approximate distance marker and the path surface.

The Unterweidligraben suspension bridge, also known as Ebliggraben, is 70 m long and spans the Unterweidligraben gorge. From the bridge, there are views of turquoise Lake Brienz and the opposite side of the valley. The bridge is in place from spring through autumn and is dismantled in winter. Check local conditions before your visit if you plan to include this seasonal attraction.

By bike or on the lake

The Brienzersee Loop mountain bike circuit is 37.9 km long and follows unpaved roads as well as two suspension bridges. For cycling plans, the distance and surface of a circular route are central, while the walking routes listed give either a duration or an approximate distance marker. These differences help you choose the activity that suits your travel plans without treating the routes as equivalent.

Boat services also offer a way to explore the lake: on its round trip, the boat travels from Brienz towards Oberried and then, among other places, to Iseltwald, Niederried, Ringgenberg, Bönigen and Interlaken Ost. If you plan a trip, check the timetable in advance.

Church and regional context

Oberried Reformed Church was completed in 1968. Its nave has a trapezoidal floor plan that is symmetrical along its longitudinal axis. The shape therefore differs from a rectangle, while symmetry along the longitudinal axis describes a balanced layout. For travellers interested in architecture as well as scenery and activities, this is a specific detail about the village.

The region is also associated with the production of alpine cheese and the European perch in Lake Brienz, known locally as Egli. These details add local products and a local name for a fish to the picture of the region.
